We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When the pandemic began, I wanted to tap into a different endeavor that would allow me to utilize my degree in entrepreneur management. I had spent the prior 12 years working in human services/education and I saw an opportunity to do something different. Being a former athlete and weekend warrior, I knew that I wanted to be involved with basketball but wasn’t exactly sure. I tried the online personal trainer, but there were too many people offering the service. That prompted me to do something even more radical with training( being a mobile basketball trainer). The rest is history!
What should our readers know about your business?
The mission of J & J House of Skills is to provide access to high quality equipment and training to all basketball players and track athletes. I, Coach Johnson, am an elite basketball skills trainer and I work with athletes as young as 5 and I also work with highly skilled professionals as well. My brother in law, Coach Wilson, is a 2x Olympic High Jumper, who overseas our track/speed/vertical training program. We execute on our mission by offering several services. We are proud to say that we are the pioneers of mobile basketball training! Want to work on your game at home but don’t have a basketball goal? We have you covered! Want to put up a thousand shots at the beach and want to use our Dr Dish shooting machine? We can make that happen! We make training convenient, rigorous, and fun! We also offer small group trainings for basketball/track athletes. In addition, Coach Wilson does one to one training for athletes looking to jump higher. For a small fee, a client can opt to train with a person who was formerly ranked number 1 in the world for high jump. How cool is that? At J & J our motto is to train different to be different and we whole heartedly embody that.
Our idea for our company came as a direct response to the pandemic. At first, Coach Wilson and I provided free online trainings for folks at home, but we were competing against a vast number of trainers. From there, we thought about what could separate us. I remembered my best friend Patrick Robinson aka Pat the Roc who is a celebrity basketball skills trainer, getting his start by driving to clients and putting a few training tools in his trunk. That stuck with me and I thought, well, how can we beef this up. I thought about what elite athletes want, who has access to them and how to make it accessible to everyone. From there, the idea of buy a trailer and hauling around training equipment was born!
People have told me that the idea of mobile training didn’t make since financially and that sentiment pushed me! Although I didn’t make the NBA, I feel like God placed me on this Earth, to do specifically this! Now, as my company continues to grow, I now have famous trainers reaching out to me wanting to know more about our template for mobile training. I want people to know that you literally have the power to do whatever you dare to do..
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m very new to Atlanta, as I just moved here from DC ales than a year ago! I haven’t gone out much but the few times I have been out, I’ve gone to Juicy Crab. I am definitely a seafood boil type of man! I’ve also been to Bee Fearless Studios! Okay, that was by default because my sister in law owns it, however it’s still a great place to go to if you are a photographer or artist!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
J & J House of Skills is a family run business and I have to give credit to them. My wife Brittni Johnson, my brother in law Jamal Wilson, and my sister in law Breonca Trofort-Wilson. Everyone mentioned has brought my idea to life and then some! Words cannot describe how thankful I am for them as there would be no J & J House of Skills without them.
