Meet Jonny Fields | Musician – Indie Folk Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonny Fields and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonny, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
Diligence – Whatever you do, do well, and may success attend your efforts. It is a phrase I heard a lot in college and it has been very important to me. When things feel like they’re droning on and I haven’t quite gotten where I want to; This phrase encourages me to push on and try to be the best I can, with what I am doing. Success can only be found when you put yourself out there with your best foot forward. It is a good way to remember to find joy in how you tackle the small things and the big things that come with living life. Music is one of the ways I find joy – every time I have a chance to write, it fills my head and demands my attention. I do my best every time I write to try to share the joy I experienced when the idea came to my mind.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a singer song writer from Georgia. I typically write Indie Folk music and songs that lean towards blues/soul so I can really belt out some notes when I sing. I have been playing guitar since I was 17. My friends and I used to lead worship at local churches for events and services to grow. On the side we started bands to share our own tunes. I had the chance to perform at the Red light Cafe, Smith’s olde Bar and other local venues to share what we wrote. For a while I stepped away from music, but thanks to the support of my wife, friends and family I have found my way back to it and have played singer song writer events to help work on my craft. I wrote some songs to play at the Eddie’s Attic competition and recently had a chance to record and release my song “No Fear”. The song is an expression of excitement for what I hope will be a great year of music. I am working on a bigger release later this year to share music new and old with those who have been encouraging me along the way – along any others who would like to join in and listen. I write music about personal experience and my goal is to stir emotions to share an experience with those who give me their time. I will be playing a show at the Newnan-Coweta Porchfest May 31st and I can’t wait to take the stage!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If we are going to be near the city, I would take them to the Beltline. There are so many awesome places to visit for good food and drinks – especially when the sun is out and all of the city is out to enjoy the day. I can’t turn down a good place to drink a beer and listen to live music.
I also love a good day at Piedmont Park. There is so much space to hang out with friends and pets! People are always moving around and there is typically and event going on that can rope you in thew for the whole day if you let it.
Decatur square would be on the list as well, from Lula Karaoke at Thinking Man Bar (any and every Friday night) to Eddie’s Attic and some fun shops to explore. you Can find anything you’re looking for in Decatur and when the Oakhurst Porchfest is going there is not a better spot to be.
The top recommendation I will always have will be hiking. Georgia is home to some beautiful mountain ranges, Kennesaw Mountain, Red Top, Blood Mountain, Mt. Yonah, and others highlight this state. I love hiking and being outside. There’s nothing like taking on a challenge, especially when it results in a beautiful and often times breathtaking view.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife (Mykayla Jeter) has done a lot to not only encourage me, but inspire me. Seeing her attack her health and wellness with vigor has been a constant reminder of what is possible if you pursue something that brings you joy and excitement. She knows that my music makes me feel that and has done all she can to support me on this journey and put tools in my hand to keep growing. I wouldn’t be the same without her by my side.
Also I would like to give a shout out to two of my friends, Jake Woodall and Kevin Bennett. They are two of the best musicians I have played music and written with. They are still writing their stories as musicians, but I wouldn’t ever hesitate to say they are two of the best I have had the pleasure of knowing. Embracing who I am as an artist was heavily influenced by the projects we worked on together, the time we spent playing songs we enjoyed and talking about music. Most importantly when you find those that share a love (for music) and you know they are genuine, you can’t help but value their input and encouragement.
The encouragement and support of others makes it easier to feel confident as I grow as a writer and performer. Music connects people in a special way and I’m indebted to those that remind me why I love it so much. Whether it be a great memory, a reflection on hardship or a moment to let go and dance; Music can capture those things and shower the shared feelings and emotions over a wide range of people. I hope more than anything I continue to build on opportunities to bring these things to life in my music so I can connect with others!
