Meet Jonathan Salama | Co-founder and CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Salama and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Since day one, Transfix has been driven by purpose, guided by our commitments to both people and the planet. Our digital freight platform connects shippers who need to move freight to the trucking companies that can move it. Our business model is underpinned by data and technology, and is designed to reduce the many inefficiencies across the freight industry, including the millions of empty miles driven, as well as the carbon emissions released into the atmosphere. And today, with up to 35% of all truck miles in the U.S. driven empty every year, the call for sustainability in the ground transportation sector is louder than ever before. We have strategic plans to expand on this important work and continue to contribute to a more sustainable, equitable, and efficient freight ecosystem. In fact, estimates from our ESG reports show that when carriers work with Transfix, millions of unnecessary empty miles are avoided every year, resulting in a reduction of operational waste and carbon emissions.

What should our readers know about your business?
Transfix is an Intelligent Freight Platform that connects shippers across the country to our network of more than 425,000 trucks with real-time freight matching. With Transfix, shippers and carriers are provided with increased visibility into shipment loads, and empty miles are taken off the road making the supply chain more efficient and environmentally responsible.

I co-founded Transfix alongside my business partner Drew McElroy in 2013. We saw the lack of technological advancement in the industry and saw a big opportunity for disruption. I served as the company’s Chief Technology Officer for nine years and, earlier this year, moved into the role of Chief Executive Officer.

The road to success is never without bumps! Up until a few years ago, the supply chain primarily communicated via phone, email, fax, and other manual methods. Transfix was founded with a goal to modernize the traditional brokerage model and continues to leverage data and technology to revolutionize the way freight moves across the country.

I would want the world to know that at Transfix, we deeply care about the strength, innovation, and progression of the entire freight ecosystem. Most recently, we have been innovating to solve for the rise in freight fraud. We partnered with carrier identification platform, Highway, to streamline our carrier compliance and onboarding process and supercharge digital bookings. Additionally, we recently launched a first-of-its-kind carrier load verification feature increasing security measures on the Transfix Carrier App.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Industry Tavern, right beneath our office at Terminus Place! With weekly trivia, events and the easiest commute imaginable, Team Transfix is regularly here after work unwinding over drinks and some great snacks! We often snag the big community table right at the entrance and our group grows throughout the night. It’s great having somewhere so fun, casual and accessible right at our feet for the team to connect outside of the office.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is dedicated to our VP of Carrier Management, Justin Maze. He recently made the move down to our satellite office in Atlanta and has been instrumental in growing not only our internal team in the Southeast, but also our relationships with our carrier partners. Maze’s dedication to Transfix and boots-on-the ground approach is critical in delivering a platform that helps to drive efficiency and value for both our shipper and carrier partners. I’m excited to not only see how our team grows under his leadership in Buckhead, but also how our network of carriers expands as well.
