We had the good fortune of connecting with Jomilla Newsom and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jomilla, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
To not pay attention to the “competition.” There are many rising creatives in Nashville right now and I’m tuned in to all of them. I think it’s important to not approach them with a jealous mindset or one of feeling less than…everyone has their own lane and purpose. I see other creatives from my city doing great things and feel more inspired than anything. I think people mean well when they give you this advice but in my opinion it’s good to know who is creating content similar to yours. I try to go a step further even and collaborate and network with those people. In my experience it has paid off. I just recently teamed up with Zach Pope of MassCTV, a media network who’s purpose is aligned with ColorTV and we are announcing some exciting things later this month. This collaboration would’ve never happened it I followed that advice.

What should our readers know about your business?
My company is called Color TV Studios, INC. We offer a studio space in Madison, Tennnessee for creatives on a budget. We have everything a media creative needs from a green screen wall and podcasting equipment to studio lighting and sound. We even have a board room rental option and a membership program for creatives who just need a space to create. Once the business grows we will also provide editing services, right now we have a few podcast engineers. We want to be a one stop shop for all things media. It was important to my team and I that we provided a safe and affordable place for creatives of all kind to join. Nashville is getting so expensive and this is something I felt the city needed at this time and I’ so grateful to be the one to provide it. I got where I am today because of my life journey I was called to be on and the people I’ve met along the way. There was no secret formula for me. I just knew what I wanted to do in life which was be in media and during the process of going to college and getting media related jobs I have had the opportunity to create something that I believe will last a lifetime. ColorTV is my purpose.

It wasn’t easy to get to where I am now, I’ve had my share of ups and downs but I never give up. I am truly passionate about what I do and I know with this particular creation it will take lots of dedication and patience. I am not even remotely where I want to be yet, I am simply building the foundation. The rest is in God’s hands.

All the challenges I’ve overcame because I had people in my corner who believe in me and truly see my vision. I feel like I can’t let them or myself down even on the days I just want to quit. I’ve come too far to stop now.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned on this journey is that the people who are meant to be apart of your story will stick around. You can’t worry about people who don’t see your vision or give up on you in the process. If God wanted them there, they would be there. You just have to focus on getting a step closer to your vision each day. Cry, rest, yell if you need to, but never give up.
I want people to know I was just the girl who wrote her vision down and never gave up. Anyone can do it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would first take them to the Prince’s Hot Chicken in Antioch to get some good, authentic Nashville Hot Chicken.

Then the rest of the week would include:

Zanie’s Comedy Club
Willie B’s for good frozen drinks and a nice, cajun dinner
Minerva for a lit day party on the patio
National Museum of African American Music for some history
Downtown Broadway for the Nashville Pedal Tavern and to experience a “honky tonk” night

Rolled Forever Ice Cream and Jamaica Way for a cheat day
The Southern V, Vege-licious and Riddim n’ Spice for a healthy day
Music City Vintage, The Trenches and Rooted for some shopping
Hiking and the aquarium in Chattanooga for a nice little day trip
Game Terminal for the old school and outdoor games
Rivergate Skate Center on Sunday night to skate with the grown folks
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely think The Black City collective deserves a shoutout. I believe in the brand and I think the are truly stand up guys who also happen to rap very well. They practice what they preach and they are very involved in the community. I see them continuing to do great things in this world.

My favorite photographer, PhotoJojo also deserves a shoutout. He started this Jet magazine series that I was fortunate to be a part of and I’ve seen it duplicated many times since then but never like his. He is a unique and talented photographer that puts his all into each shoot he does.

I mentioned Zach Pope already of MassCTV media company. He is a special person who has a brand that puts a spotlight on Nashville culture in a such a professional and interesting way. He is truly a value to the city and I can’t wait to see more from him.

I can’t forget my fellow women and the first one that comes to mind is Taniesha Westbrook, the founder of Cool Girls Create. Her brand is so creative, daring and presents fashion in a way I’ve never seen before. I’ve seen her grow as a business person and I admire her work ethic and dedication. She is always up to something new and it’s really exciting to watch.
