We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnny Kirton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnny, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always been a creative person as long as I can remember. I’m not sure if I can even consider this a conscious career choice as much as it is just how I operate. I’m always fascinated by the design and creation of things.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I wanted to create pieces that stood out, not only in luxury but in status quo. I had no funding or financial help to speak of and slowly grew piece by piece, even if it meant getting behind on the bills. I wanted to get the best tools and the finest materials on the market to create products that represented counter-culture and how people outside of the upper middle class expressed themselves. These products, when taken care of, will outlast their owners, a rebellion against capitalistic fast fashion while helping to reduce our carbon footprint. This brand presents a way for people to celebrate their individuality while standing for something greater than themselves. Hence, the name Defiant Goods.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Truth be told, I don’t get out much haha. I’d have to say we’d checkout the Botanical Gardens, Krog Street Market, and Oakland cemetery for sure and it wouldn’t be a legit Atlanta trip without getting some good wings in, my go to is American Deli. Dave and Busters is always a good time too.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be anywhere with this business without the support of my friends, some of whom have purchased several of my products and continue to do so with every release. There are too many to name here but I cannot express my appreciation enough for them. My business is completely online so every like, follow, share, shoutout post, etc. matters greatly and some of them have gone above and beyond to support me and this business. They know who they are and I will forever be in their debt.
