We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnathan Russell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnathan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always liked to draw and crate art work as a kid. I always had a thing for fashion watching my mom and other family members put together their outfits. When I would go to school I would take extra clothes in my bookbag so that I would be able to changes my outfit half way through the day. I took my designs over the years and put them on t-shirts and started to wear them. I realized I created a look that I did not see in the malls and quickly realized I could make money off of my ideas and my style. I started my company Street Culture We Trust in 2001 and just kept building from t-shirts , hats, joggers, hoodies and denim jackets. I wanted the brand to speak directly to the street culture lifestyle which is where all culture derives from.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Please tell us more about your art? Art is life its in the very fibric of what your wear it speaks to the person you are the life you live the things you care about. Street Culture We Trust gives you that confidence to say this is who I am and how I feel. I make sure that when I create my designs I create them with feeling I give the art work life with colors the words drawing the entire picture speaks. I create limited edition wearable art that will standout and cause conversations.
How did you get to where you are today professionally?
The only way to grow is to never give up business is just like life itself there’s no right or wrong way you just have to find your way. Always cratering and putting out product is the only way to find out what works and what doesn’t work which will help you move forward in life and business.
Was it easy?
Yes and No, because I love the challenge of reaching my goals regardless of how long it may take me because its my race to run and no one can do it for you.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
No one owes you anything and its up to you to make it happen now go out and make it happen.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Street Culture We Trust…..Fashion, Art & Music! It’s a lifestyle of being the person you were created to be, unapologetically. Having the love for Fashion, Art & Music at a young age helped me stay out of most trouble where I grew up in the housing projects Earle Village. Street Culture We Trust is all that we knew growing up in the projects. It was the place that was designed to destroy but it can also create something great, something legendary. Now go and be who you were created to be in Street Culture We Trust – Johnathan Russell
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start out by going to Atlantic Station for some day time fun just to see the people and have a noon time cocktail at one of the out door bars/restaurants. After the noon time cocktail a quick trip over to Little Five Points to hang out and catch a vibe while shopping for some new kicks that will complement one of many outfits changes for later in the week. Take a short drive to Ponce City Market to grab a quick bite at the food hall. Night out on the town would start with dinner at Rays In The City and a hit one of the many lounges in and around Atlanta.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my mother Debra for always being there to push me and believing in my vision and being a source of wisdom in my life period. I also want to thank Daysha for being my unpaid assist, camera lady and videographer we work good together. I love them both.
