We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnakeshia Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Johnakeshia, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am from Jacksonville, Fl. I believe that my upbringing has molded me into the woman that I am today because of the strength of the women in my life. Growing up, I have never seen my grandmother work a job because she has always had her own business. Whether it was a furniture store, daycare, or rooming house. She has always been a hustler and still one to this day. I also saw my mom work 2 jobs growing up before she started her own business as well as my aunts who are now business owners. I would like to say that being an entrepreneur is something that was passed down to me. If it hadn’t been for the women in my life I am not sure I would have the same tenacity or perseverance.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After a failed attempt at fashion school, I returned home and started networking and building a fashion portfolio. From there doors begin to open for publications which inspired me to pursue a degree in journalism so that I can become a fashion editor. While in school, I started my personal blog where I would show my audience DIY’s, fashion trends, and my travels. I wanted as much experience as possible so I wrote for different blogs/ magazines so that I can prepare myself upon graduating. However, after I graduated and moved to Atlanta I didn’t find a job so I made one for myself.

I’m not really good at taking no for answer because I believe I can just do it myself. So I started building a community of fashion lovers who love to create. I find the latest trends in fashion and show them how to recreate them. I also launched an online magazine with a yearly publication called the fash magazine that covers every topic that you can imagine.

This journey hasn’t been easy. It’s been filled with victories and some disappointments but I believe in me so despite the challenges I believe I owe it to myself to see my vision a reality so I’m not stopping.

I would like for other women or men to look at me and say “if she can do it, then so can I.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friends come to visit me it’s about to be a lituation. (LOL) Their visits will consist mostly of brunching at places like BQE, The Beverly, or Toast of Lenox. I would take them to the selfie museum and restaurants like the garden room which is a great place for photo ops. We would definitely be looking for spots that have nice aesthetics and a vibe for pictures. For the nightlife, I would take them to the reverb or any place with a rooftop. We would hit fat Tuesdays a lot because who doesn’t love a nice daiquiri. Then after we played all week we would attend the dream center for our Sunday worship.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my family for being my rock. I can remember when I first started out as a fashion stylist and I didn’t really know how to get started or any models so I used my cousins and friends. I personally would like to thank them for believing in me enough to model for me even though at the time it wasn’t my best work.

My mom and nanny are also the cutest because they still find items for me that they think that I could wear in my blog or reconstruct. It’s the smallest gestures like that which warms my heart and I am so grateful for them.

I also would like to thank my best friend who encouraged me to pursue my dreams in fashion. There are so many people who have played a pivotal part in helping me become successful so I would like to thank every designer, hairstylist, photographer, model, writer, etc. who I have worked with thank you.
