We had the good fortune of connecting with John Bratton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career because I feel most at home when I am composing or performing music. My parents said even as a child I would walk around constantly humming or whistling melodies I had composed in my head. Getting to see young musicians get joy and value from the music I have composed and seeing the impact my original scores for films have on both audiences and film directors are two of the biggest things that bring me joy in my career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I actually got where I am today by first being a band director in the Atlanta area. For me, the schedule and demand were so much that I found an outlet in writing my own music. If I had an issue I was working through at work, I would sit down at my computer and start writing. I started to realize after my 3rd year of teaching, that I could make a career out of writing music for both concert bands as well as marching bands. Later on, I got the opportunity to score a short film for the Atlanta 48hr Film Project with my father. I loved the entire process so much that I decided to start pursuing composing for media as well. I have been working on small projects and growing the media scoring side of my business ever since. It has definitely not been an easy journey, and one thing I have learned is that you will be told no way more than you are told yes. But the times that you are told yes are more than worth it! I would love for the world to know that I focus every day on bringing my clients’ projects to life with an original score that will keep their audience in their seats, wanting more. I am focused on bringing my clients the quality of service and product they deserve, no matter what the budget!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite things to do in the city would definitely include a walk around Piedmont Park, seeing a show at The Fox Theater, and I absolutely love seeing the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra anytime I can!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I absolutely could not do what I do every single day without the constant love and support of my amazing wife, Anna. She inspires me every day to be better and push myself further than I ever think I can.
