We had the good fortune of connecting with Jo Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jo, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from the 757! Norfolk, VA to be exact. I did not grow up rich at all but my grandparents and parents spoiled me as a child & I can say it definitely turned me into a diva. For instance, growing up I always knew I was going to be someone of significance. & as an only child all you have is your imagination, right? lol. I’m not sure if I was manifesting it or what but I always thought highly of myself & my grandparents would always remind me of how a young lady should act/be. I grew into myself more & more as the years went by & continued to evolve to new levels as I got older.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I didn’t know what I was doing when I first started my Influencer journey. I remember telling a former friend “I want to be a socialite or an Influencer” not knowing where to even start, I just knew I wanted to achieve it. I would post regular pictures & snippets of my life with a certain aesthetic & hope for likes lol. I had to teach myself everything because I didn’t know anyone personally from my area doing it at the time. Google was my best friend. People were attracted to my style but that wasn’t enough for me.
My online presence didn’t really start to grow until I became a flight attendant in 2019 because I was posting that I was here, I was posting that I was there. People were interested. I don’t blatantly advertise being a flight attendant anymore but IYKYK, & if you’re reading this now you know (do not ask me for a buddy pass.)
People really liked my sense of style & seeing me travel but it wasn’t until I started posting about my skincare journey that really started grinding the gears. Skincare grew my following tremendously & I was actually shocked by it. Because I didn’t think anyone would care to watch someone extract my pimples and rub on my face lol.
I’d say this was an easy journey for me personally because it was something destined for me. I only posted about things aligned with who I am & what was relatable. The only thing that was & still is a challenge for me is being consistent. I am very inconsistent with posting but when I do decide to post, my followers are still there supporting me because I am true to my brand. I only post with authenticity & I am grateful for the community I’ve built/continuing to grow.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If one of my friends were coming to visit me for the week they would leave with a stomachache because we’re eating nonstop LOL. Some of my favorite places to eat would be Hen Quarter, Little Minor Taco, Capital Grille, Crab Boss, Roaming Rooster, Po Boy Jim’s, & a few others. We would go sit in a suite at the Wizards NBA game, Hookah lounges, endless museums & ride bikes or scooters around national mall. & I would absolutely HAVE to take them to Jeni’s because they have the best ice cream!!! & if they wanted to take a quick trip out of town, we could do that too because I’m the plug. jk. (not kidding LOL)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would definitely have to shoutout my family, they are the reason I am who I am today. Obviously I would not physically be here without them, but the lessons they’ve instilled into me will forever live. Also, a huge shoutout to my boyfriend, he supports my every endeavor no matter what it is and pushes me to continue my craft.
