We had the good fortune of connecting with Jinlin Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jinlin, what makes you happy? Why?
Personally, I feel simple things can make me happy – enjoy a delicious meal, watch a great movie, listen to musics, or spend time with my friends can light up my entire day. I always tell myself to focus on the small things which can make me happy, and they’re actually easy to get. I started to enjoy and appreciate every moment of my life when I discovered those simple happiness of mine.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what makes me different is I like to try different things to help me find my direction. Before coming to SCAD to get my second degree, I have no idea what is the goal of my life and career. During the study of my master’s degree, I found I like to conduct research and figure out users thoughts, behaviors and feedback. That actually intrigues me to learn more about UI/UX. Then I had my internship last year at a medical device company as a UX designer. This whole process is not easy for me at all, because for most of the companies, I’m just a student who has graphic design backgrounds without any UI/UX working experience. So I have to improve my professional skills, try to get some certificates, and use my works to prove that I’m capable with the skills and have the potentials in this field. What I learned from that is stay curious to try different things and keep learning throughout your whole life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d love to take my friends to the South Downtown area and Castleberry Hill to walk through the old brick buildings and get immersed in all those amazing graffiti arts. I also wanna take them to the Ponce City Market to visit some stores and get some really good ice cream at Honeysuckle Gelato. I love Chinese foods, so I would probably take them to UrbanWu or Good Harvest. Or maybe take them to Case Cielo my favorite Mexican restaurant.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really want to thank my family, especially my mom for supporting me all the time when I decided to pursuing my master’s degree and choosing my future career path of being a designer. She always have open-minded about my decisions and give me lots of advices and mental supports when I was stuck or get lost. I’m also thankful for all of the amazing professors that I met at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I really appreciate professors like Sohee Kwon, Melissa Kuperminc, Christina Maloney, Holly Quarzo, and Daniel Muller. They helped me a lot on different fields such as graphic, UI/UX, and motion design. I wouldn’t make that progress without their helps and feedback. Last but not least, I wanna shoutout to my friends; we learn from each other and grow together, which makes me feel “I’m not alone” while I’m walking through this long journey.
