We had the good fortune of connecting with Jillian Todd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jillian, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
That you have to suffer to reach financial freedom! In my coaching and courses, I teach people to build momentum towards their goals to avoid burnout and self sabotage.
Often when people fall short of their financial goals, they fall in one of 3 camps…
1. They went too hard!
You try to go from 0-100 in lightning speed, causing yourself to burn out! You tried to save the money, pay off the debt, grow your biz, AND dump your online shopping habit all at the same time.
2. They didn’t have enough support!
No one understands or supports your financial goals! Your friends and family don’t understand your reasons for trying to save money or get out of debt, making you feel defeated before you even start.
3. They sabotage their success!
Deep down, you don’t believe you can have the things you really want. Because of this, you self sabotage by overspending, making bad investments, or switching strategies every 5 seconds.
Instead of shaming you for all the things you’re “not doing right” in your finances, we focus on small, actionable goals that build confidence and help you believe you can actually achieve those big goals on your heart.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The number one thing I want you to take away from working from me is Money Confidence.
It’s not about you having someone holding your hand the whole way, but teaching you the skills to make empowering decisions for yourself around money and the life you deserve.
Sure, I’m here to coach you, to teach you, to show you the path, and (lovingly) kick your butt when you need it.
But the truth is, I want you to be able to do those things for yourself.
Money confidence to me means you feel empowered, in control, and secure financially.
You understand your business and personal finances, where you are, and what you need to do to move closer to your goals.
But just like any and every other skill in your life, if I do my job right, you won’t need me forever.
I’ll always be here rooting for you, but I promise, you are smart enough, savvy enough, and educated enough to manage your finances.
I’m here to show you that next best step.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is such a fun question! There are almost too many cool things to choose.
I live on the west side, so first I’d probably walk with them to west side provisions to eat and drink the night away! Little Trouble is my favorite.
Of course, then you also have to visit the rainbow crosswalks in midtown, grab a drink at one of the gay bars, and ride the beltline down to the 4th ward skate park!
Last stop would probably be the west side breweries (Monday Night, Best End, and Wild Heaven). On Sundays they usually have a vendor market and live music too!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Here’s the thing – I LOVE the work that I do.
And sure, you could argue that I love spreadsheets and number crunching more than the average person, but that’s not the thing that has me waking up with energy every day.
It’s YOU.
It’s seeing you make progress towards your saving goal.
It’s your text in the middle of the afternoon saying you just made the final credit card payment.
It’s your little happy dance on a zoom call when you realize you can actually ACHIEVE the goal you were afraid to even say out loud.
Sure, I work hard because I want to live a life I’m proud of and leave a legacy for others.⠀
⠀
But something that pushes me even beyond that is thinking of how my work helps creatives do the same for themselves and their families.
