We had the good fortune of connecting with Jill & David Scruggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jill & David, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
In a word, passion is the most important factor behind our success thus far.
We’re a husband-and-wife team of boudoir photographers with a growing studio in Marietta. We’re crazy about the art we create. We relish seeing the impact we have on the lives of our clients. We revel in our growing community of fans and past and prospective clients. We love continuously improving the business, marketing, and technical aspects of our intimate enterprise. We love being entrepreneurs, and we love being successful as we create stunning photos that change the lives of the people we capture.
We’re fed by a couple of sayings. One, that if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life. Two, that a person with a passion for something will always outperform the impassionate person with an natural ability.
Doing what you love and are passionate about gives you the determination, the resolve, and the reserve to embrace the inevitable challenges that you must overcome to bring your dreams to fruition.
That’s what we do.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We’re very particular in how we capture photos of our clients. We rely on entirely engineered positioning of our subject to communicate strength, power, confidence, vulnerability, grace, sensuality, levity, lust or longing. All while rendering an entirely natural feel to the rendered photo. We enhance the intended messaging with lighting that ranges from light, bright and airy to the darkly dramatic.
Ninety percent of our creativity is in organizing the subject, in posing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, we’re foodies, so we’d present a short list of our favorite dining experiences and let them choose according to their palate:
Italian: Amore e Amore, 467 North Highland Avenue. Gale and Giovanni and their staff serve fantastically authentic Italian dishes with an atmosphere that their guests fall in love with.
Steak: Bones, next to the JLR dealership on Piedmont in Buckhead. Impeccable white linen service and a 6 or 9 ounce filet that’s been rated the best in the U.S. Literally, according to Zagat. And us.
Ramen: Jinya. At either of their greater Atlanta locations, you’ll find a wait worth your patience and ramen bowls that are fresh, stylish, and mouth-watering.
Sushi: Sushinobo, in the 4500 W Village Place shopping complex in Smyrna. Hands-down the best sushi in Atlanta. Atmosphere is quiet, and never too crowded.
Indian: Taj Mahal Grill off Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw. Try the Chicken Taj Mahal and the Chicken 65. “Medium” is plenty hot.
Thai street food: Soi 3. Also in Kennesaw on George Busbee, Chef Chompoonich introduces his patrons to an entirely non-Americanized version of Thai dining with his street food. Every mouthful of any dish at Soi 3 is a sensory explosion of tastes and textures. So glad we found Soi 3!
Thai: Nan Thai Fine Dining. On Spring Street in Midtown, This is Atlanta’s consummate Thai establishment, Chef Nan Niyomkul continues the family’s celebrated dining legacy after the death of her husband and Nan founder Charlie Niyomkul earlier this year. Expect proper service and flavorful dishes exquisitely presented.
Pizza: Lots of folks rant about Antico on Hemphill Avenue, But we’re partial to the thin, delicious wood-fired pies served up at Baraonda Ristorante & Bar, located for more than 20 years a block from the Fox on Peachtree. It closed the location in August (wish we’d caught that so we could visit one last time), but it’s reopening in Sandy Springs next year, thankfully.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many who’ve contributed to our professional and entrepreneurial growth. We credit role models and educators like Jerry Ghionis, Ryan Schembri, Sally Kolar, Jenn Bruno Smith, Humberto Garcia, Alison Carlino, Danny Dong, Erik Valind, Roberto Valenzuela and Easton Reynolds for the various influences on our trajectory as photographers and business owners.
