We had the good fortune of connecting with Jiabao Sun and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jiabao, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
We, as human beings, spend our lives chasing and researching balance. The balance between life and work, the balance between us and others, the balance within ourselves. I don’t think I’ve been able to find a balance all the time – it’s a very difficult and lifetime subject.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work, which started with the topic of the relationship with my family, faltered at first, and it also hides my guilt with regard to my relationship with my family. In each subsequent rethinking and creation, I began to pay more attention to my own cognition. Noēsis, as the title of my work, is a Greek term that refers to the perception of the mind in general. It also can be used in psychology to mean the mental process used in thinking and perceiving. It effectively summarizes the process of my thinking and cognition while being alone. The project aims to visualize my inner dialogues and thoughts, which are sensitive, fragile, and dark. While gazing into my heart, it also explores the universal topic of the relationship between temporality and personal emotions.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would like to take my friend to my favorite grocery store – Trader Joe’s (XD). I will take her for a walk along the Beltline and to see the busy but youthful Ponce City Market. The next stop is the bustling Midtown where is the place I work. I’ll take her to the Buford Highway and Duluth, that is very convenient. But I think the most important thing is to take her to meet my friends in Atlanta. Because they are the ones who make up my memories of living in the United States as a foreigner for five years.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
That must be my husband. He is my partner, my other half, my best friend. We are both artists, who always have a surprisingly tacit understanding of art, work, and life. No matter what happen, he is always supportive and able to receive my emotions. We have made each other successful today and will support each other in the years to come.
