We had the good fortune of connecting with Jhanel Monet and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jhanel, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is support. I strongly believe in the power of support and relationships. People are more likely to book with someone based on a referral/word of mouth. For instance, my clients will be in the grocery store and someone will stop and ask, “who does your hair? I love it, it’s so neat.” To have my work appreciated by others and translate into a new client relationship is the best feeling, absolutely top tier. Support can go a long way in this industry, may lead you to your next opportunity.

What should our readers know about your business?
It’s not easy being in the beauty field in Atlanta, especially when 100+ people do similar services as myself. You have to set yourself apart from the crowd. Find a niche within your industry. Coming into the industry my goal was to create more feminine, fun styles and showcase how versatile locs can be. Many people shy away from starting their journey due to the “ugly phase” and I want to change the trajectory of the experience. Therefore I incorporated faux locs into different styles to give the illusion of mature or longer locs to ease with the transition. Being a stylist has its challenges trying to please everyone but my priority is to satisfy my client without compromising my artistry. Sometimes I’ll have to be honest with a client and say “that style may not work for you” or “let’s hold off on this style until I gain more confidence”. It’s nothing wrong with being forthcoming about inabilities as a stylist. It’s best to do what you’re strong at while practicing other techniques and styles. Being authentic is apart of my brand, I’m not out here faking it to make a dollar. My reputation matters and will carry me further in the long run.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friends were coming to visit I’d take them to my favorite restaurants: Le Colonial, Rock Steady, The Continent, MCK or Divan. My sister is the socialite so she knows where to hang but I’m the foodie girl so I handle the reservations. If you’re in town on a Sunday check out the day parties in Atlanta or if you’re low key head to brunch at Taverna or The Breakfast Boys. If you are in town for the week check out a show at City Winery, they have live music and R&B artists perform. There’s always festivals or events going on in the city, the options are endless. It really depends on the person’s interest.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family, first and foremost. I’ve worked many long nights and missed plenty of family functions to build my brand. Thank you for being so gracious. Next, I want to thank my clients turned friends because you all have been with me since the beginning and continue to push me creatively. Lastly, my mentor Coco, you are truly the best. Thank you for believing in me and taking me under your wing. I wouldn’t be this far without you teaching and guiding me to jumpstart my career. In all thank you to everyone who has allowed me to bless their hair or face I’m grateful for your support.
