We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Warren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic or creative career because it has always been my passion. I honestly believe that it pursued me way before I was born. My creative abilities come so natural in every aspect from designing balloons all the way down to decorating. It has always been a piece of me and I love everything about it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The Modern Designs LLC is a company that thrives off of creativity and sharing that creativity with others to help make their day a little brighter. What sets me apart from others is the “extra mile” that I will go to see my clients happy. I enjoy building genuine relationships with my clients. I am the most proud of how far my business has come. Each business has its ups and downs but the true test arrives when you have to hang in there. I can finally say that my business has “hung in there” and we are climbing our way back to the top. I am excited to see what the future holds for my business! How did I get to where I am today professionally and was it easy? Oh no, it was far from easy. I actually started my business back in 2016, I was “CrownzCreations” at that time, and I had the slightest idea on how to run a business but I did what I could. I specialized in making custom photo frames and letter boxes for events. I wanted to grow but I got discouraged and I quit. I started my business again in 2020 and I have been at it since then. In 2020, Modern Designs by J Leigh came on the scene, I decided to clean up my brand last year and to switch my name to The Modern Designs. I have cried many days and nights, I have been broke, I have had zero customers but one thing that I did not do this time around was quit, simply because quitters never win! You will not be down forever so keep going! I have learned to never give up, keep God first, network because networking is the key, and to continue to be genuine in all that you do!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question lol! If my bestfriend was visiting the area on a week long trip I would most definitely take them downtown. Thats my favorite area to be in the city. For dinner we would go to The Genre (delicious hot wings) or Sage for their soul food egg rolls and a really good drink! Afterwards we would go straight to SOB (South of Beale) for dessert! They have the best bread pudding ever! We would probably spent most of our time at the Hyatt rooftop, taking a stroll along Big River Crossing (The Mississippi River bridge), or simply just hanging and catching a movie at the local theater downtown. In my view some of he most interesting people are downtown. I specifically enjoy shopping! One of my favorite places is Silk n Honey downtown, they have some of the best clothing pieces and even better people. I am super laid back so wherever I go, its most definitely going to be a chill environment.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to God most importantly because without him I am nothing—without him I would have never made it this far in my life or career! My family, small circle of friends, and my long list of supporters are also who I would like to dedicate this shoutout to because without their consistent love and support there would be no Modern Designs! They are the true push behind my business and I am forever grateful for that!
