We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Shoulders and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business, was to create generational wealth. I wanted to be able to combine, my passion of art, with my gift of gab, and all my multifaceted qualities. I felt that, if I used my voice in all these avenues, it could help brand a different narrative for the black culture.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I created Be Real Relations six years ago, with no true vision of who, or what I wanted to do. I knew for a fact, I wanted to Be Real, in who I was, and Be Real in what I do. That’s the motto, for my company. I knew I was always critiqued, for the elaborate style, and wit. I always had a passion for art, but knew numbers came easy. I deemed myself, the Artistic Accountant. The fact my business, is building to be a conglomerate, where I bring art, accountancy, culture & society together, is what sets me apart. There’s a special way to connect with people, not most can study, but it’s innate. It wasn’t easy, I literally sparked an idea in 2015 to try my art on jackets, I feel this was before it was a thing now. I mentored financial literacy, but always did it where it was a connection. I learned that, it’s not how many you reach, but how impactful that reach is. I want the world to know, it’s okay to speak your truths, express yourself however you see fit, and let no one belittle your journey.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would show someone the best time ever, but first making sure I knew their desires. It’s imperative to make sure the trip is exhilarating, and memorable. I would also take them on an adventure, white water rafting, rock climbing, hiking, etc because I feel some things you have to experience outside the comfort zone, a lot like business. Some opportunities you can’t miss, because you’ll regret. I’m spontaneous, and that’s why my friends are my friends, we’ll do what you like, but best believe we’re doing something extraordinary.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are four VERY important people that I wanted to dedicate my shoutout to, the BIG THREE and The Creative Comedic Queen! First, would have to be my business mentor, Dr. Syleecia Thompson. Next, would be my sister in success, Sharí Nycole. Another, would be my sister in soul, Syleena Johnson. Last, but certainly not least, Amanda Seales. Her book, Small Doses Potent Truths for Everyday Use, has been vital. Her creativity, and her vision for self are a staple for me. All four of these women, have helped me to be resilient in all I do, and continue to do. Those who deserve little credit, and recognition aren’t even worth the energy to exude! That’s how minuscule they are.
