We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Russell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
At my kindergarten graduation when asked what I wanted to be when I grow up, my answer was a baker. Years later, I’m living out that dream. Although baking is always something I have been passionate about, I actually didn’t intend on starting a business. After posting the birthday cake that I made for my grandmother on social media, I received so many requests from others wanting a cake. Two years later, I have a successful cake business.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart from others is the authentic taste of my products. The fact that I am self taught and have accomplished so much in just two short years is what I am most proud of. Since starting my business, I have definitely had my fair share of challenges along the way but with God by my side there has never been a challenge that was too hard for me to overcome. If there is anything that I would like to tell world about my business it would be that my best is yet to come.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not one to go out much. My idea of a fun day out is pretty simple. Maybe have dinner at a nice restaurant and ice cream at Scoops to end the night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband. He plays a big role in my success with my business. He has always supported me in any way that I have needed.
