Meet Jessica Michel | Hairstylist & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Michel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what do you attribute your success to?
Motivation and support have been the most important factors propelling the success of my brand. Reflecting on the journey I embarked on nearly three years, it’s astonishing to find myself at this point in time, self-sustaining through entrepreneurship. There has been many challenging moments I encountered along the way, however, the unwavering support of my family and friends enabled me to push through to achieve my goals.
Through the ebbs and flows of this entrepreneurial journey, I also kept myself motivated through it all with my fear of failure. The realization that my desire to become a hairstylist nurtured for over a decade, was hindered primarily by my own fear of failure. Knowing that my biggest obstacle was myself and my fear of failure, I decided to channel that fear into a driving force, propelling me forward with renewed determination. In essence, I harnessed my fear as a powerful motivator to overcome challenges and transform my aspirations into tangible success.

In my view, haircare and styling is a work of art with your crown being my canvas. I am devoted to creating an unforgettable experience, leaving you feeling light, free, and rejuvenated after each hair service. It is this commitment to post-service empowerment that sets me apart. Upon entering my space, I aspire for you to feel a sense of safety, trusting that your hair is in capable hands.
My greatest source of pride comes from witnessing my clients exude confidence post-service, whether it be through visible progress in their hair growth or or the realization of their desired style, perhaps even surpassing their expectations.
While my professional journey hasn’t been without challenges, some may perceive me as charismatic and extroverted, when in truth, I lean more towards being an introvert. This initially presented a hurdle, as my work often requires facing people in what some might consider an intimate setting. Recognizing that most clients seek a boost in confidence, I embraced the necessity of being authentically myself, encouraging them to do the same with their enhanced appearance.
A crucial lesson learned along the way is that my effectiveness as a stylist is intricately tied to my internal state. Understanding the energy dynamics at play, I acknowledge that I cannot create magic if my inner light is dim. Confidence, both in myself and my craft, is foremost to instilling the same in my clients. Additionally, I’ve learned the importance of seeking and accepting help. Initially relying solely on my life savings, I hesitated to ask for support. However, those who loved and believed in me supported my vision, providing invaluable assistance for which I am eternally grateful.
My brand, The Best by Jess, was born out of a deep-seated need for self-expression. As an artist and creative, I grappled with fear of failure and critique, limiting my expression to a close circle. The journey to confidently step into the industry took five years to birth, overcoming setbacks. Now, having been my biggest obstacle, I am determined to inspire others with a vision to overcome their self-imposed barriers. My message is clear: Step out of your own way, do it scared, with or without support, with limited resources—just do it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Unfortunately, I am not from Atlanta and haven’t visited in almost 8 years so I wouldn’t know what would be the interesting places or things in to city to check out, I am, however, from and currently live in South Florida but I’m sure my insight on the Miami night-life a go-to spots would be irrelevant lol.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In my journey, there are numerous individuals who have played a crucial role in shaping my path, and I am fortunate to be surrounded by an incredible support network. At the beginning of my hair styling endeavors at the age of 13, my two sisters were not just my family but also my very first clients. Their trust in allowing me to style their hair provided the initial spark of confidence I needed. As they became regular clients, my assurance grew, allowing mw to extend my services beyond my immediate circles.
During my high school years, a pivotal moment unfolded when my childhood friend, now my best friend, found herself in need of a skilled braider. Despite her mom’s discerning nature when it came to choosing a stylist for her children, she took notice of the work I had done for my sisters. With her approval, I had the opportunity to braid both my best friend and her sister’s hair. This marked a turning point, as I transitioned from styling hair within the confines of my parents’ kitchen to braiding for classmates, neighbors, friends, and extended family.
The support of my sisters and friends served as the foundation of my confidence, providing me with the fuel to showcase my skills to a wider audience. Without their encouragement, I might not have taken the art of hairstyling as seriously or mustered the courage to put my work out into the world and evolve my passion into a serious pursuit.
