We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Kane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We spend so much of our time working that it was imperative for me to be happy at work and with my career. I was always passionate and excited about the world of beauty, so this seemed like the natural direction to go in. Both of my parents are entrepreneurs so I also was fortunate to be able to watch and live the life growing up.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I opened Fabu Face Spa almost 21 years ago when I was 23. From the beginning I separated my business from the others by focusing on the face and stating that in the name, some of the best advice my dad gave me. I had went to school for esthetics in Atlanta, and went to school for makeup in LA, and wanted to put the two together. I am proud that I won “Best Facial” by Atlanta magazine as well as Allure magazine multiple times, as well as just winning an award for “Best Day Spa” from Atlanta’s Best magazine. I’m proud to have made it through a recession, and a pandemic, and to 20 years of business. There were times of major stress, heartbreak, and disappointment, I got through those times by facing the issues and dealing with them the best way I knew how and by simple persistence. People always advise to not work in your business but one of the most valuable things I think I’ve done is work in my business. One because I love what I do, but also because I know all issues first hand and with that knowledge I can take better care of my team. What I would want the world to know about our story is that we are here for the love of it and the care for our clients and each other. My goal was never to make tons of money but to love what I do everyday and create a space for others to be able to do that too. I care about my team, and we care about our clients and have seen them through ups and downs over the years. We work on their children now which is incredible!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the newer wine bar VinATL in Edgewood, amazing flights of wine and wine selection! I love Poor Hendrix in Kirkwood for a good vibration hang out! The food and drinks are awesome and the music they play is perfection. For the best sound bath in Atlanta, I love Soulful Sound Studioz in Oakhurst, it will take you on an amazing journey!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad believed in me and supported me from the beginning. He helped me figure out a realistic and good place to start when opening a first business. He gave me all the advice & guidance I needed to be successful. But prior to that moving from Salt Lake City to Atlanta, in search of a career in makeup artistry that didn’t work out, my mom clear as day told me too look into esthetics, and that she thought it would be really good for me. I wasn’t open a year when our lead esthetician Lisa Lee walked in to see if she could work at Fabu. She and my best friend were in esthetics school together. My best friend was originally supposed to open the spa with me, which was why she was in esthetics school, but decided to move back home to Utah instead. She passed along the job opening to Lisa, and the rest is now 20 years of a solid business and personal relationship history! She has been instrumental in the shape of Fabu Face Spa. My husband and best friend Michelle have also been instrumental in loving and supporting me through all of the ups and downs of small business. My brother has always helped through his photography and handiwork. My sisters effort in doing the spa’s social media and marketing has been huge, something I could never do but also wouldn’t want to hire a stranger for. And my current team at Fabu, they are such a solid, genuine and kind group of people that are true professionals in their field, I am forever appreciative of them. It truly is a gift and necessity to have all of these people’s input and support for the success of 20 years of Fabu Face Spa.
