We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica “J.Nicole” Screen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica “J.Nicole”, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is nostalgia. My musical sound is constantly evolving to stay relevant and current but I always keep that nostalgic 90s “feel good” rnb vibe in all of my records. When I write for or vocally produce other artists, they always love my unique melodic approach and I feel like that signature has allowed me to continually grow my brand and business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey as a writer and an artist has been WILD to say the least! I’ve worked with some amazing new and established talent, placed records, traveled and all around have grown in my confidence as a black female creative! Of course the journey comes with some bruises and scrapes. I’ve lost business and personal relationships, I’ve had financial setbacks, I’ve seen the “ugly side” of the creative business, but everything has been a lesson! Every time I’m in the studio or working on creative ideas, I am reminded why I love this work!
The accomplishments I am most proud of are winning the ASCAP Harold Adamson Lyric Award in 2019 and getting my first TV Sync placement on the critically acclaimed drama “The Chi”.
Some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way are to NEVER PLAY SMALL. Shine and use all of your gifts and talents to reach your goals. Don’t stop or quit for anyone. Always push yourself and be sure about YOU!
Lastly, LEARN THE BUSINESS. There is a lot of fun in the creative process but it’s never fun to not receive credit for your hard work. Learn the business so you can enjoy the fruits of success.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love ATL! When you visit, you have to see The Beltline in midtown, grab some drinks at Bar Vegan and finish that off with some juicy burgers from THE Slutty Vegan. Some of my favorite spots in the city for drinks, hanging out and having fun are East Atlanta Village, Pasha and Painted Pin.
I also love hiking so any of our beautiful trails here, like Oxbo Trail and Roswell Mill are a must see when in town.
Creatively, I love recording at Doppler Studios, performing at open mics at Kat’s & Apache Cafe!
All around ATL is a city of great food and nightlife and there is always something to get into creatively.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out ASCAP and the ASCAP Urban team for not only providing unique and consistent opportunities for artists and songwriters to network and share their craft! Working with my PRO has been an amazing journey, and I’ve grown so much as an artist and business woman because of my time with them!
