We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Hawks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started working nearly full time starting at age 16 while I finished high school online. At 19, I moved to SC and started working as a Chiropractic Assistant while going to college for Nursing for two years.
Internally, I desperately wanted a job that would provide me the ability to work from home, travel when I wanted, allow me to have financial freedom & express my creativity that I felt had been stifled by years of being in 9-5’s. I was 20k in debt by age 22 while also working around 50 hours/week & running a vintage clothing business online on the side. I was truly living paycheck to paycheck and felt like I had lost my sense of self.
I would spend my spare time googling work from home jobs but felt like the only way to have that was to become an influencer/Youtuber or to get lucky and land a remote position.
Everything changed in 2019 when I discovered the online business space through a new friend. It felt like I had opened pandora’s box & I was immediately obsessed because it was EXACTLY what I had been looking for.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am an online business coach specializing in teaching people how to start lucrative businesses online without having any previous online knowledge.
I think what sets me apart the most is my background. I grew up with an extremely tumultuous home life in a town that not many people leave if they are born there. I spent most of my childhood & teenage years trying to get through each day and catering to other people’s needs. This caused me to grow up never truly feeling like I knew who I was or what I wanted. I moved out of my parent’s house at 15 and moved out of state at 19.
I was a college dropout and didn’t have years of business/school knowledge behind me when I started. I truly started my business from scratch and worked so hard to get to where I am now.
When I started my business in 2020, I was able to begin making 9k/month within 4 short months of my first post on my business Instagram. I attribute this to investing in my business, constantly learning new marketing strategies, providing an amazing client experience & constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone.
I believe that anytime you want to learn a specific skill or have a goal you’re striving towards, the best route you can take is through learning it from someone who has been exactly where you are in the past and has successfully accomplished what YOU want to accomplish.
Starting an online business now is extremely accessible, even more so than when I began in 2020. But that has never meant that it is easy. When you’re diving in to a new venture like this, there is so much responsibility and decision making that falls onto your shoulders. It can feel incredibly overwhelming, scary and at times, lonely. That’s why community & mindset is such a big focus when I’m mentoring students.
A lot of my students resonate with my story & background which is a big reason why they feel drawn towards my coaching programs. I didn’t have a perfect family life, I didn’t come from money, I paid for all of my schooling and bills on my own and I was never “set up” to succeed. When people are at the major crossroads of deciding if they want to start a business, having someone who has walked a path like that mentoring you by your side that can understand your past struggles/the fear of starting & prioritizing yourself for once can be what helps propel you into huge growth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hi- I’m actually in the Bluffton, SC area instead of ATL! Let me know if you still want me to answer this q!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My dad, Donald. He has always been my #1 supporter throughout my entire life. I don’t remember there ever being a time when he told me I couldn’t achieve something or that I was dreaming too big. Only words of encouragement and support. He’s always been a safe haven for me to talk to about anything, vent, cry or celebrate with.
