We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Guevara and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
The most important thing I’ve done as a parent was understanding early on in the process of parenting that what may work for one family won’t necessarily work for the other. Reading books and getting all of the advice possible is incredibly helpful, but it’s important to sift through it all, seeing what fits with your family values and works best for your family dynamics. As parents we can tend to hold ourselves to these impossible standards. We see that “perfect” family on IG or compare our family to the latest “expert” parenting podcast we’re listening to and we come to the conclusion that we are failing miserably. We strive, we struggle, we compare. So to the parents co-sleeping and crib-sleeping, the ones whose children know all their letters by the age of two and those whose children would rather do anything other then sound out letters (that was my son!), to those that are able to provide all things organic and homemade and those that are able to get that plate of food on the table with a little help from Chick-Fil-A… you all are doing awesome! Learn. Take in the advice and the podcasts, then apply only what works for your dynamics and are in line with your values. All of the fads will fade and new ones will appear and attempt to sell to us the secrets on “how to parent perfectly.” Just stay true to who you all are as a family and who you are as a parent.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am most excited about every time I have the opportunity to capture glimpses into the life story of each of my clients through the lens of a camera. It’s always such a joy and honor to be entrusted with these moments.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a few days to show my BFF a good time, there are a few must dos that come to mind:
-We’d walk one of my favorite sections of the Atlanta Beltline, from Krog St. to Ponce City Market. Stopping to “refuel” at one of the best spots at the Food Hall in Ponce City, El Super Pan.
-Friday night, we’d dance to our hearts’ content to live salsa music at Mojitos, Cuban Bistro in Peachtree Corners making sure to order the masitas de puerco, the vaca frita and the empanadas, washing it all down with coconut mojitos of course!
-Hiking is a must for me and Georgia has many beautiful options, so we’d head to Indian Seats at Sawnee Mountain Preserve. It’s a light hike with such pretty views. But before, we’d stop by Nido Cafe for their delicious Matcha Green Tea Latte and brunch.
-Lastly, we’d spend the day in the North Georgia mountains, making sure to visit my two favorite wineries: The Cottage Vineyard & Winery and CeNita Vineyards, Winery & Tasting Room. Both have a lovely choice of wines, breathtaking views and easygoing vibes.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am privileged to have the most amazing support group of family and friends that encouraged me to take that leap of faith two years ago in beginning this photography journey. But I would love to specifically recognize three photographers that have inspired me and helped me grow into the photographer I am today. Lauren Freeman Photography and Lucki Malloy Photography, thank you for providing a space through styled shoots for photographers to learn and develop their style and Alyssa Hollis for providing resources and training for us to improve our craft. Thank you for being so accepting and encouraging to this newcomer.
