We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Fenon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor that has contributed to my success thus far has been the notion that if NO ONE can do it like I can. And I say that with all the humility in the world!
I realized that in order to stand out from the competition, I had to completely own MY secret sauce. I couldn’t copy the success of everyone I looked up to and “make it” in the same way they did. I had to forge my own path. I started exploring what inspired me and instead of trying to copy it, I tried to copy how it made me FEEL. Over time, my work started to take on an original flavor that really helped my business and brand stand out from the crowd.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My photography is an emotional journey. It’s inspired by human connection but also influenced by fashion and editorial work that is cutting edge and artistic. I live to surprise people and never like to do the same things on repeat. I’m always looking to try something new. As a wedding & portrait photographer, especially in today’s day and age, I am bombarded with pictures and videos constantly on social media. I strive to always take that inspiration and never directly copy it, but rather express in my own way how those moments make me feel. I think my biggest strengths as an artist lie with my ability to listen to others and truly hear the inner workings of their heart, making sure they feel seen and represented in their photos, rather than just standing there looking cute just for the sake of being cute.
It wasn’t an easy journey to get here as an artist or a brand, I doubted myself quite a bit along the way. But I learned that if I didn’t stay true to myself or my art that I was doing my clients a disservice, giving them a run of the mill experience rather than something tailored to them. Anyone can take photos on a phone these days, so it’s no longer about the gear or even the quality of the image. It’s about the vision, and I’ve always strived to inspire my clients to stay true to their own and allow me to collaborate with them on creating something truly one of a kind.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d say my good friend Emily of Elle Studios has helped me tremendously throughout my career. We have always bounced thoughts and ideas off one another and been there to vent to each other on hard days. She has helped cheer me on and made has never told me that “I can’t.”
