We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerusalem Tekle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jerusalem, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I wanted to establish a boutique style shopping space where African inspired jewelry can be made available. The emphasis is on a Pan Africa theme while paying homage to my home country of Eritrea located in the horn of Africa. Lila Charm’s purpose is tied to social responsibility with women empowerment being the focus. Lila Charm’s ultimate goal is to continue to offer affordable pieces that are made in Eritrea/Africa using local techniques and sustainably sourced materials. Lila Charm’s mission is to foster a sense of female empowerment by working with women artisans in Eritrea/Africa and contribute to economic development in Eritrea/Africa.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets Lila Charm apart from others is that although the key products are East African focused, I am a true believer in inclusivity, thus the website is very welcoming and heavy on the Pan Africa theme/spirit. I love the fact that customers make observation of that fact and point it out, which is very much appreciated. Initially, I had a vision but being that this was my first business venture, it was a bit overwhelming to launch the brand. As simple as it sounds, I got one thing at a time completed and got to the point of launching with great response/feedback from customers. The energy was just amazing.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the Washington DC area so there are lots of activities to indulge in at any given time. Virginia and Maryland have some amazing wineries and of course DC has many activities from outdoor concerts to sip and paint activities to partake in. A simple brunch with an activity as such afterwards would be an ideal day of fun!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say the strong women in my life who showed up everyday as their authentic self and set an example of strength, creativity, ever evolving growth, and spirituality.
