We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerrod “J-rod” Sullivan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jerrod “J-rod”, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Without taking risks, I probably would not be where I am in my career and life. As musicians and business owners, we always take risks releasing music and products.
Back in 2006, I uploaded my first drum video to YouTube. Growing up in a family as the only musician and no industry connections, I felt that social media was the best way to promote my work and possibly network with other musicians. I wasn’t sure what would happen or how people would receive my work, but I decided to go for it and put myself out there. After uploading that video and a few others, I got a call to do my first local gig. Since then, I’ve shared the stage with many of my favorite artists, traveled worldwide, and been featured on national TV several times.
Another time that I took a risk was in 2017. An online supporter of mine asked if I had any merch available. At the time, I did not. This motivated me to start a t-shirt brand called “Create The Climax.” I knew nothing about running a clothing line, but once again, I decided to go for it once I figured out how to start. I fronted my own money to purchase a bulk of t-shirts to get started, and long story short, this idea failed and did not return a profit. This led me back to the drawing board to brainstorm and think of something more universal but still something I believed in as a musician. So one day, God gave the slogan idea “got pocket?” As a young musician, my mentors always told me, “Pocket gets you paid.” Suggesting that if you play what’s necessary to serve the music, people will hire you. Even though I connected more with this slogan, based on how the first t-shirt idea went, I was nervous about releasing another t-shirt with a different slogan. However, I decided to go for it anyway. Since launching, got pocket? Apparel, we’ve fulfilled thousands of orders and shipped to more than 30 countries.
Taking risks can often be intimidating, but it’s important to remember that it is necessary for growth and progress. Of course, it can sometimes lead to failure, but these failures also provide valuable lessons and experiences that can ultimately lead us toward success.
Tell us how you got your start? What sets you apart from other musicians? What challenges have you face and how did you overcome them?
I am a professional musician, primarily a drummer. It all began at age four in my mother’s kitchen, beating on pots and pans while listening to some of the best r&b and gospel music. Since then, it’s been a long but worthwhile journey. From playing drums at my home church to being recognized on YouTube and doing my first gig in 2006, I am now able to play drums full-time and tour the world.
Social media has played a massive part in my success as a professional musician. It has allowed me to network and connect with some amazing people. I believe in any industry, building relationships with people is essential. There are some opportunities that money can’t buy, but relationships can.
Throughout my journey, I’ve faced temporary defeat, self-doubt, and numerous challenges. There have been many times that I’ve considered quitting. However, I’ve overcome adversity by having a relationship with God, and remembering my “why” which drives me to do what I do. As Nipsey Hussle says, the highest human act is to inspire. You have something special when someone is inspired by something you do or say. I don’t take that for granted. Anytime someone comments that they are inspired by content or music that I released, it motivates me to push through adversity. It’s bigger than me.
What sets me apart from anyone else is my original sound and approach to music and drumming. With time, patience and practice, I’ve evolved into the musician I am today. Growing up in the church, playing gospel and r&b music, then joining The 4 Korners, a jazz fusion-based band, has allowed me to be and play what I feel, while still serving the music. When someone recognizes your sound without physically seeing you, it is one of the greatest achievements of a musician.
One of the most important lessons that I’ve learned is the importance of consistency. When we are consistent, we build habits and routines that support our goals and lead us toward success. Consistency also separates those who are truly willing to accomplish their dreams.
Another lesson I’ve learned work-life balance. It is important to remember that work should not come at the expense of our mental and physical health, relationships, and personal interests. Striving for a work-life balance means making time for oneself and loved ones, as well as pursuing hobbies or activities outside of work. This can ultimately lead to improved productivity, creativity, and happiness in both our professional and personal lives.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We gotta hit up Ponce City Market. They have some of the best food options, in my opinion. My favorite spot there is H&F Burger. The rooftop there is dope too, cool spot to take your girl.
Another spot is the Battery where the Braves play. It’s live on gameday!
Since I’m a musician, of course, we have to check out some live music. St. James Live is one of my favorite spots in the city for live music. Good food too.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this to everyone on my team and in my circle that continues to inspire, motivate and challenge me daily. Also, to my fans and supporters. I love and appreciate you all!
