We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerilyn Harper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jerilyn, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose a creative career to connect with others on a deeper level and foster understanding through storytelling. As an avid reader growing up, my passion for writing began in elementary school when I crafted a unique story about visiting the planets. My favorite assignments were always the ones where I could tell stories about myself or share how I saw the world through the lens of my adolescent experiences. My teacher encouraged me to pursue my passion further, sparking my desire to create the kinds of universes I loved exploring in books.
As I grew older, I learned how to transform this passion into a purpose. Creativity allows me to amplify underrepresented voices and challenge norms in ways other fields can’t. Through my work with EssenceGU, GrownMag, and Offculture, I’ve sparked conversations about evolving beauty standards and the need for greater diversity and inclusivity. I challenge industry norms, such as the neglect of plus-sized women by department stores, while advocating for a more inclusive fashion and beauty space. My narratives focus on how beauty standards evolve within underrepresented cultures, showcasing their influence and resilience. This work has positioned me as a thought leader in the Zillennial space and fuels my ongoing passion for a more inclusive industry.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art explores how fashion and beauty shape our daily lives, using storytelling to highlight their cultural impact. From political battles over hair discrimination leading to the “Crown Act” to brands eliminating plus-size sections, these issues are deeply woven into our society. By spotlighting these unique perspectives and trends, I aim to help women feel seen, represented, and confident. My work bridges fashion, beauty, and culture through meaningful narratives, and I’m passionate about exploring how these industries intersect with broader conversations like the economy, music, and body positivity
What sets me apart is my ability to connect through honesty and shared experiences. As an HBCU graduate, a plus-size Black woman, and a proud Zillennial, I offer a unique perspective that speaks to the everyday girl—one who treats each day like a runway, embraces accessible beauty, and enjoys a touch of nostalgia. My art isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about representation, empowerment, and encouraging women to embrace their individuality. One of my proudest moments was seeing my work resonate with audiences, from beauty beginners to fashion lovers seeking fresh perspectives. Every opportunity to share my voice excites me, especially when it connects with readers who see themselves in my stories.
My creative journey hasn’t been easy. In 2023, I launched my blog “Confidence Avenue” to explore fashion, beauty, and pop culture, creating a space to express my voice and passions. In 2024, I decided to contribute my voice to other publications as a freelancer. I’ve faced blocks, tight deadlines, and rejections. But through mental wellness practices—like long talks with mentors, motivational playlists, daily affirmations, and staying grounded in faith—I’ve learned to overcome these challenges. Along the way, I’ve learned valuable lessons that now guide me: “The only way to bounce back from failure is to try to succeed again” and “You’re born for two things: great and greater things.”
My brand is about feeling as good on the inside as you do on the outside. My journey is about building a legacy that empowers others to embrace their uniqueness and feel confident in their skin. Through my work, I create spaces where women, especially young women like me, can see themselves represented and inspired to express who they truly are.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My code for a good weekend is the triple E’s: Eating, Entertainment, and Exploration. On Friday night, we kick things off at Your Third Spot for arcade games, bowling, and good food. We head to the High Museum of Art on Saturday to admire my favorite pieces and explore the other pieces of artwork. Saturday night is all about dancing, so we’re hitting a party with a great DJ—I’m on the lookout for DJ Empressah’s, DJ Dos Dias, or an “No Sections” events. We’ll finish the night with a classic Atlanta order of “lemon pepper hot” wings at the restaurant Wingsnuts and Chopsticks. I love that this spot offers tofu versions of every flavor for when I’m feeling vegan. On Sunday, we’ll become “ATL” liens by watching a sports game at a local bar, then end the day with vegan ice cream at eighty7sweets Vegan Ice Cream Company, worth every star in its 5-star rating.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I want to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity. To my parents, thank you for nurturing my passion with your constant encouragement. To my amazing group of friends, whom we’ve nicknamed “Shenanigans,” thank you for always being there to encourage and lift me up. To Kiora, who always expects the best from me and pushes me to reach new heights, I’m forever grateful. And to Angel, the first photographer who helped me build my vision—thank you for helping bring my creative ideas to life. Lastly, a special thank you to City Chic clothing for gifting me my fabulous fits and helping me feel confident and stylish.
