We had the good fortune of connecting with Jelia JC Live Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jelia, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
Writing has always been a love of mine, and publishing my first book was an incredible experience. It solidified my desire to pursue writing full-time. My ultimate goal is to create inspirational books and devotionals that uplift others and strengthen their faith. I’m actively working towards making this dream a reality.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey began with a communications degree from Fayetteville State University, which opened the door to radio. But my love for writing soon led me to a local newspaper, where I got my start.

Today, I wear many hats. I’m a multiplatform producer at the esteemed WRAL news station, captivating listeners on two radio stations, including Magic 106.9 on weekends, as the night host at 92.1 Choice FM, and, most excitingly, a newly minted author! My debut devotional, “Give God Your Broken Pieces,” is a 30-day exploration of faith.

Reaching this point is a testament to God’s grace. I never envisioned working at one of the area’s leading news stations or returning to radio. The road wasn’t always smooth. My news and writing career saw its share of rejections and setbacks. But the biggest lesson I learned was the power of trusting God’s timing.

It’s easy to get discouraged by a string of “no’s” and doubt our dreams. But those challenges are often roadblocks, not dead ends. Don’t let negativity dim your passion. It’s there for a reason. God’s timing is perfect, and with faith, the pieces will fall into place.

This is my message to the world: Never surrender your vision. Those who don’t understand it don’t matter. God doesn’t expect you to have all the answers; just trust in Him.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s plenty of activities in Raleigh, but if my friends are in town, I’d definitely recommend checking out some key spots. Explore the North Carolina Museum of Art, have a blast at Pullen Park, enjoy the scenic Dorothea Dix Park, especially during events like the Dreamville festival. CAM Raleigh is a noteworthy black-owned museum worth visiting, along with the entertaining Drive Shack and more.

As a devoted foodie, I always seek out new culinary experiences. Some top picks to share with friends include My Way Tavern, known for the best shrimp mac and cheese in the city, the flavorful offerings at Kales Kitchen, the vibrant atmosphere and delicious fare at Gonza Tacos y Tequila, and the delightful selections at Flying Biscuit Cafe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Landing this big news job wouldn’t have been possible without my amazing family and friends. They deserve all the credit! When I felt nervous during the application process, my daughter was my rock. With a simple “you got this,” she instilled the confidence I needed to walk into that interview room filled with producers. My children continued to be my cheerleaders when I decided to write a book. They listened patiently to my ideas, tirelessly proofread drafts, and even offered support during those late nights of writing. I’m incredibly grateful for this incredible circle of support. They’re the reason I’m here today.
