We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazz Cummings and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jazz, what’s your definition for success?
I feel that success is something that only you can define based on your own journey. The meaning of success is different for everyone but to me, to be successful is to be happy and content in what you’re doing in life. Success to someone can mean being wealthy and having all the glitz and glam but an amazing success story in my eyes would be me doing photography full time and getting paid to create and lay out all kinds of content and concepts.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Getting to where I’m at today definitely wasn’t easy but being surrounded by people who pushed me forward and believed in me was definitely a help. I feel like I’m different for many other photographers because when it comes to concepts and creativity, I take it to the next level. From doing shoots on top of a mattress floating in the middle of a lake to using different color gels to make the models picture pop more. I just want the people who admire my work to know that it’s okay to do something that you really find unique and different to do that others may not understand or like.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Though I’m a California native, I love Atlanta and the atmosphere of it all. If I was to bring one of my closest friends from California out here and show them around the city I would definitely take them to Krog Street Market so we can eat at Varuni Napoli‘s pizza and walk around the belt line.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Though I’ve come a long way within my photography career, I wouldn’t be able to do it without the opportunities given to me by the company The System. They gave me an internship that allowed me to grow within my skill and gave me opportunities to shoot with artist such as Boosie, Tokyo Vanity and BRS Kash. Truthfully, I wouldn’t be able to be where i was today without the guidance of Morehouse grads Kyle Hobson (@kylethejukebox) and Jamaree Woods (@jwoods_14) also paved a way for me to be great by presenting me with events I could shoot at that would allow me to get my name out there and also put me into groups such as “Cinematic Shooters Only”, which is an amazing collective of people that consist of creatives that help each other make amazing content whether that be through videography or photography.
