We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazm’yn Ragin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jazm’yn, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I choose to pursue a creative career due to the lack of representation of African American women of my complexion in the creativity community. While growing up in Manning, SC, I never had any prime examples of women of color choosing the creative path for a career and being successful in it. It also was never showcased to me as a career option in school. Therefore, with me not having that representation growing up, I want to be able to give it to other young African American girls ; especially if they have a similar complexion to me. In addition, I also chose this career path because it is something I have enjoyed since I was little. I never wanted to work a job that felt like a burden or a place I would dread going to. The career goal was to always be happy and at peace in my work field. I can definitely say that my creative career as an Entrepreneur/ Creative Director brings me the most happiness and peace.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a Creative Director and entrepreneur what sets me apart from others is that my business is solely based on my art and my experiences. Everything is created by me. Everything that I put out is produced by myself such as my custom designs, logo, the graphics on my page, photoshoots and etc. I have hand produced everything except for my products that were purchased through third parties. However , I am the one who customizes and designs all of the products. I am most proud of where my creative visions have brought me. I never would have thought following through on a creative idea would bring me this far. Especially because I used to be afraid to showcase my craft at a point in time. I am also proud of the confidence I have gained creatively. I am most excited about where my creative visions will take me in the near future because this is only the beginning!
I first started by business, Jazm’yn Exclusives, as a way to fill my time and pockets during 2020’s COVID-19 quarantine. I started off doing commissions paintings for locals in my hometown, Manning, SC. This then grew to me making customized clothes by sewing and using acrylic paint to design clothing items. After a while, I got burnt out doing work for other people. I wanted to put out something that representatives me. This then lead to me making graphic tees of my personal art work. Now, I transformed my business into something that is more than a clothing brand based on my art. Jazm’yn Exclusives is a brand that markets trucker hats and customized items that promotes authenticity in your craft. This brand
also captures photographs that allows myself and others to bring their creative visuals to life through their craft.
During each transition stage of Jazm’yn Exclusive I have faced numerous of challenges. However, I appreciate ever obstacle I have faced because they allowed me to figure out which direction I wanted to take Jazm’yn Exclusive in. Every obstacle made my brands path more clear of its vision.
I over came these challenges by embracing them. You have to learn to accept your mistakes and set backs in order to really appreciate the come up. The biggest lesson I have learned along the way was that I do not have all the answers and patience.
I want the world to know that Jazm’yn Exclusives is a brand that promotes authentically being yourself within your craft and bringing your creative visuals to life through your personal craft. I also want the world to know how much passion and effort I have put in to being an Entrepreneur and Creative Director . It is not an easy occupation but I have goals for myself that no one else can achieve for me besides myself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend and I were visiting Atlanta, GA, I would plan a day full of activities such as Brunch at The Hive, Beat the Bomb , and a picnic Piedmont Park. While visiting The Hive I would make sure to order a round of bottomless mimosas with their Crab Macaroni. Then for an active bonding activity, we would go to Beat the Boom to go through some exciting challenges. Lastly, to unwind from such an active day we’d have a picnic at Piedmont Park and debrief the day!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be in the position I am in today without the man up above and my guardian angels watching over me. In addition, my parents have supported all of my artistic habits since before I can even remember. They have bought all my art supplies while encouraging me to use my gift to make something of and for myself … even when I was drawing on the walls of the house ! My sister has also been by my side cheering me on even when I wanted to give up on this career path. She knows every hardship and blessing I have faced over the years as an Entrepreneur. She has always been the one to make sure I push pass all of my self doubt. In addition to my sister, my best friends have also been in my corner supporting me along the way. Lastly, I would like to give a special thanks to my Illustrious HBCU, Savannah State University, and my modeling organization Savage Incorporated Models . Savannah State has given me the platform to promote my business while networking with some amazing individuals. My modeling organization has shown me my potential as a Creative Director. Without that organization I would have never gained the skills of how to navigate through a creative idea. They say you can’t raise a child without a village and my village is the biggest part of my story. If I did not have the support of my village, nothing that I am doing today would be possible. I thank God everyday for the village that I am blessed with.
