We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmine Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jazmine, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m terrified when it comes to risk. I always second guess the decision and talk myself into leaning towards familiarity and comfort. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that getting comfortable with being uncomfortable offers greater reward. This summer I decided to leave my full-time job as a therapist working at a non-profit to start at a private practice. Let me say that again, I left my full-time, full health benefits, PTO paying job to start at a private practice where I had no clients yet which meant no real pay yet. I did not take the monumental decision lightly, but one thing I had to remind myself of is the bigger the risk the greater the reward. Thankfully, I was right. I couldn’t be happier at the private practice.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m a mental health therapist at a private practice called Fleurish Psychotherapy in the Atlanta/Decatur area! I absolutely love my career. I love being able to help people tap into their strength while navigating through their feelings towards healing. I also love our practice and that I can be myself at Fleurish! Fleurish helps their clinicians thrive in their environment which also helps our clients get the best care. We make genuine and authentic connections with our clients! This is what I dreamed of! I remember starting in my undergrad at Kennesaw State thinking that it would take me forever to get to the place I’m at today. I felt closer to my dream when I got into Georgia State’s social work program, but there was still a mountain of work to be done. During all of this, I had to remind myself numerous times that anything worthwhile takes time. It wasn’t a quick journey by any means, and I still have things I want to accomplish, but I’m happy with where I’m at. I want everyone to know that when you trust in yourself and let go, things will fall into place! I know it’s scary (especially if you’re a planner like me), but don’t let your fears get in the way of your dreams! Get comfortable with being uncomfortable because that’s where the growth lies!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Goodness, there are so many great spots it’s really hard to pick! It really depends on the vibe you’re going for. If you’re looking for a cozy casual spot, I would definitely recommend Hatti B’s in Atlanta! Decatur Square has some pretty amazing spots too. I love Leon’s Full Service, Siam Thai, and Butter & Cream (for a little desert action). If you’re looking for some bomb pizza I’d recommend Ammazza. Lastly, if you’re craving pasta like I’ve been for the past couple of weeks then Campagnolo is going to be your jam. Trust me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ugh there are so many people that I want to thank! I’ll give two just to keep it short! My amazing fiancé, Nicholas Logan, deserves some major cred. I have to admit that he has been my ride-or-die, my sounding board, and my hype-man. He’s really taught me that taking chances is a good thing. He’s helped me to lessen my fears around that and I love him for it. My amazing boss and founder of Fleurish Psychotherapy, Erin Hinek, deserves some cred too. She pours into each of her clinicians and that is rare to see! She, among many other mentors and supervisors that I have had in the past, deserve a huge shoutout for helping me become the best therapist that I know I can be.
