We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmín León and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jazmín, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I always try to make sure the things I’m creating and joining in on feel authentic to me! I think that success is achieved in small increments and can only be determined by your perspective on life, so looking on the bright side is definitely a key factor of that. I try to dip my toe in different roles on and off set, and find that I feel happier and more fulfilled because of it.

Staying true to me is also aided heavily by my incredible support system. Filmmaking is a very hands on and collaborative process, and I really feel like I am at a point in my career where I have a solid list of people I can call on to help bring a vision to life! As a video editor I have always pictured my job like piecing together a very expensive and high stakes puzzle – I would have nothing to put together if not for my crew. Having people who are rooting for you makes it easier to not only keep pushing, but to continue doing you!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
While I’m a total social butterfly and have major FOMO when I’m not on set, my heart lies in the cutting room. I love sitting and piecing together hours of hard work and molding a project to the director’s vision. My experience as a performer has definitely given me a great sense of musicality and rhythm that I try and incorporate into my work, and I hope to one day pursue music video production (thank you Lady Gaga).

At this point I am most proud of the marketing work I have done with the Latinx Club at my university and bringing our small but mighty community together. As a first generation Mexican-American I always felt a societal pressure not to pursue an unstable, artistic career, but being in a room with other latin creatives has made my collegiate experience infinitely better. Knowing that there are more people like me in my classes pushes me to be more authentic to myself and my identity in my work. Joining the club on a whim as a freshman gave me the opportunity to share my culture with others, create some cool art, and capture moments I didn’t think I’d have in my college years.

I am definitely most excited to begin filming my senior thesis film, Erica’s Erotica – a lush, lingerie-laced coming of age story about girlhood, female s*xuality, and a sensual tv-saleswoman misguidedly leading a teen girl to search for the perfect set to seal the deal! My team and I have been working hard to create a story that represents us as film makers and women, hoping to push a conversation about female s*xuality that is open and transparent. Self image is vital in growing up, and combined with religion, s*x, and cultural identity it can get a little muddled in that transition from girl to woman. Our goal is to make the topic of losing your virginity less taboo while seeing more women on and behind the screen. It has major chick-flick influences and a nostalgic 80s/90s vibe, and I am so excited to get my hands on the footage to piece our brain child together at last!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take them to Emerald city bagels on Krog street to try the lavender vanilla latte with a delicious, fat bagel on the side. If you keep walking down theres a hidden shop called Atlanta Worldwide Gallery that has super cool Atlanta memorabilia and secondhand items and cameras – it’s small but packed with lots of eye candy and vintage records and playboys! We would have to hit up all my favorite Gwinnett thrifting spots because the ones in midtown and five points are soooo overpriced, and I would definitely make the drive for them to go river tubing in Helen. I’ve also always wanted to go to Babyland so I fear we would have to make a pitstop before cruising the Chattahoochee.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shout out to my parents who are my everything! From a young age they have given me all the tools and support in my artistic endeavors, and never once made me feel like I couldn’t be successful in whatever it is I chose to go after. From driving me to rehearsals, sitting for hours at dance competitions, pushing me to pursue a higher education and beyond, they raised me to be proud of myself and my heritage. Even if they don’t fully understand my constant film rambling, I know they’ll always be truthful and tell me how it is.
