We had the good fortune of connecting with Jayla Latimer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jayla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I knew from my very first couple jobs i did not like working for anyone. I despised the idea of having to ask permission to vacate or even take a break. I preferred to answer to myself and already had a background baking since the age of 9. Throughout high school, family and friends started asking that I bake for different occasions for holidays and birthdays and they finally started paying for my services. From there the more orders I accepted, the more practice and confidence I gained. So I eventually took the leap, I applied for my LLC, created my social media and took my business to the next level.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Aside from other artists, my creative mind exceeds any limit when baking. I’m able to turn others’ likes, hobbies and ideas into a cake and I enjoy that tremendously. I got to where I am today with years of practice and dedication and it endured an immense amount of tears. Although encountering a lot of mistakes and mishaps, i learned what to do come the next cake, or how to engage with the next customer. From my small business, i’ve taught myself everything on my own when it comes to baking, i’ve learned better communication skills and how to persevere.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If i had a friend visiting my hometown, i’d take them to eat for breakfast at Original pancake house (OHOP), they have the best pancake and syrup combination, then we’d eat lunch at 220 Merrill, very nice aesthetics as well as food, then for dinner i’d take them to flemings, it’s a steakhouse and a fine dining restaurant, and they have really good food for a great price. For drinks i’d take them to bar louie and flemings and then i’d take them to urban wick candle, a place we have that you can go and experience the steps to make your own candle. I live outgoing people that are willing to try something new because that is the type of person i am.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout my mother out, without her push and support I wouldn’t have came nearly as far as I have. No matter what, she’s been there every step of the way.
