We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Heath and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Staying grounded and re-investing. Every since I decided to become self employed on a full time basis, I became a minimalist . I stayed focused on building the business. Even if things were going great , I kept working as if things were not going great at all to stay ahead. Not to mention I’m consistently upgrading my equipment and skill set to be able to continue showing growth and creativity.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
my art consist of photography and videography . In this creative platform , I feel that perspective is what sets all of us “creatives” apart. It’s simply the art of story telling. We could all have the same story, but present it differently. Im just proud to be able to create a space where I can display my visual perspective . Work ethic , sleepless nights, and a strong support system is what got me to where I am today. There are millions of creatives that do what I do and hundreds , if not , thousands in my local area . I never looked at myself as being the best in my area. Ive only been doing this for 2 years . It was not an easy 2 years at all. I challenged myself to learn and build this craft in months in order to compete with creators that have been doing it for much longer than myself. I focused on out working everyone around me . I always told myself in the beginning that ” they may be better at this than me, but they not working harder than me” or ” only I can stop me ,no one else can stop me” . The biggest lesson I’ve learned along this journey is customer service . That’s the biggest issue that consumers have in this industry . You simply cannot name or find one person to say they had a bad experience with my brand. I stand on business 24/7. I just want the world to know that I am here . I want to have all of you along for the visual ride of my growth , experiences , and creativeness. I want you all to focus more on where we are going together instead of how I got here. you are apart of my journey
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Columbia,Sc has a lot of food offer for it to be a small city. So on Monday we would head down to the beach (its not far) . Tuesday is taco day . Real Mexico on bush river road would be the move . Then head out for some 2 wheel therapy on motorcycles. The motorcycle and car scene in columbia is very popular. Wednesday we could go to Rioz Brazilian steak house , then to Pon di River for karaoke night . Thursday is they day to be in 5 points for bar hopping. Friday we will go down to the vista to spot hop. one of my favorite places in “the joint ” on Main Street . Saturday the food truck festival downtown will be the move . do some shopping then head to “Red Sake ” for hibachi . we will end up at Social night club that night. Sunday is a toss up . depending on the Sunday in the month there may be cars and coffee events going on, social events or day parties going on downtown , or a game. most definitely will go get food from “my House” restaurant . we may go down to lake Murray with some jet skis . columbia honestly is centralized to a lot of great places and cities . your within an hour or two from Charlotte , smoky mountains, the beach , Greenville , savannah , Charleston , myrtle beach and etc. you really could plan a trip based off your surroundings and have a great time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout to my family for sure . they have always been super supportive . Shout to Donnell Antonio . That’s my brother right there. Being around him for years, I witnessed and experienced so much in this field which led to the motivation of me doing this today. There’s never been a time where if I needed some advice , he didnt come through. My bro Chapo Work definitely deserves a shout out. When I decided to get into this line of work , He was the first person to invest into my brand . I didnt even ask him to, he just wanted to because he believed in me . He also pushes me to keep at it and keep growing. even when times get hard , he is always there trying to help figure out how we can make things happen. My guy Taj Stewart for sure. the amount of knowledge I’ve gained from him is unmeasurable . My crew ( BJ , Zo, Lil Jay, spielberg) definitely can’t forget them. always supportive. There are several models in Columbia,Sc that I want to shoutout for always working with me in the beginning to create unique bodies of work. columbia has a lot of talent . I cannot forget my Reesi poo . She’s the most supportive person in my corner . And the only person who can deal with my consistent rants , ideas, and long going conversations about my feelings as an entrepreneur lol . My patna Ambitious , who I’ve met recently , most definitely keep his foot on the gas with my brand. Also, I have to shout out everyone who has either worked with me or wants to work with me. because of you all, I am able to continue to do this. There’s so many more people I could name but we would be here all day. very grateful for my surroundings in general
