We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Holland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmine, how do you think about risk?
The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. No one has ever became successful by playing it safe. Risk takers, in my opinion, are the minority. Most people are naturally risk averse which is beneficial primarily because they’ll face less competition. It also eliminates the possibility of looking back and asking , “what if?”.. Even if you fail, you’ll walk away with more experience and become more knowledgeable in areas that was once foreign territory to you. Taking risks forced me to accept the idea of setbacks. I don’t view setbacks as road-blocks, I view them as detours. Even if I fall short of my goal, I’m back to the drawing board mapping out another plan. I understand now that everything will not turn out exactly how I anticipate it to and that’s completely fine. I’ll live to fight another day.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Outside of my hair business, Lady Ice Extensions, I am in the Management Development Program at Geico’s Corporate Office in Macon, Georgia. I applied for this program shortly after I obtained my Bachelors Degree from the University of West Georgia in Political Science. Their hiring process was by far the most tedious, thorough. and overwhelming process that I have ever encountered. The entire onboarding process took about 4-5 months. As I got further and further into the process, the interviews became harder and harder. Only 1% of applicants that apply to the Management Development Program gets hired and that’s what makes my job even more rewarding. It wasn’t easy but it was definitely worth it. My goal is to have multiple sources of income so I didn’t allow my business to limit my opportunities. The hardest part was the competition that I was facing with the other applicants but all I could do was be the best version of myself. If there was one thing that I would want the world to know about me, it’s that I am more than just a pretty face. I love seeing people’s faces when I begin to talk. I take pride in being one of the smartest people in every room I walk in.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have always been ambitious. However, my mother’s death made me pipe up a tad bit more. Typically, one will view the loss of their mother as an unfortunate event. However, the timing of her death was essential to my personal development. She died two weeks before my birthday, five months before my college graduation, and six months before my first LSAT attempt. If I had not preserved through the storm, I wouldn’t have graduated college. One does not drown by falling in the water. They drown by not swimming. I swam as if my life depended on it. In a sense, it did. Her life taught me to never be afraid to take risks. She taught me that even when things aren’t working in your favor, never lose hope. Her life taught me how to maneuver in uncomfortable situations gracefully even when the odds are stacked against you. She taught me how to live. However, I will have to give most of the credit to my father. I wouldn’t be half the woman I am today if I didn’t have him in my corner. He is definitely my most lethal weapon. I can’t even put in words how valuable he is to me.
