We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Hodges and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmine, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
A year ago I had a business coach and many amazing co-coaches. During our time together they reminded me that your business will trigger you. It will bring up things you thought you may have already healed from and it will do so boldly. When I first heard this I nonchalantly brushed it off because “I got this” rang in my head. Well to say the last these past few months I have been humbled. I have been reminded why I truly started my business and I have been made to address some things head on. One thing that also rings true is there is no rush to this and it is more than okay to pivot and find your footing when need be. OshunRoyalty is a safe space to heal, to create, to just be you, to find and cultivate joy. For anyone that has ever felt casted aside, or ridiculed. For anyone that has been abused, molested, or beaten and robbed of their autonomy. This business is more than “there is a light at the end of the tunnel”, it radiates true inner peace with the philosophy that through sisterhood and many healing modalities our lives can be reclaimed and our bodies can once again feel like home.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have recently adopted the title multi-passionate creative and business owner. As someone who has struggled with attention and focus problems, I always thought I was just indecisive and flighty, however, I now embrace the many facets and layers of who I am. So my name is Jasmine Hodges and I’ve adorned many names however I go by Jasminesoulchild at the moment. I am a poet, a reiki healer, holistic business owner, advocate for sexual assault awareness, and an herbalist. I no longer see myself as being made up of parts and my prayer is that through me openly navigating being a multi-passionate creative and business owner that I can encourage others to do the same and not feel guilty or misplaced for doing so.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As mentioned earlier I am Jersey born and raised so the first spot I would take my bestie to is Van Gogh’s Ear Cafe. It is a beautiful intimate space with thrifted tables and chairs that would not dare to match. It has so much character and love seeping through the walls and food that’ll knock your socks off. We would also be sure to get a pot of their loose leaf tea and maybe even return for one of their open mic nights! The next place to eat would be Bay Leaf in South Orange. They have authentic Indian Food and the chicken samosas and butter chicken with Naan is to die for! If you have not noticed by now I love to eat so on another day we would have to head to Pirates Pizza for their signature chicken alfredo pizza or Killer Vegan for some delicious cheese fries. Ofcourse I would not dare to forget about my coffee lovers so we would have to make a pit stop for either Ayala (Phillipino Coffee Shop) for an ube latte or Gongcha (Taiwanese Tea Shop) for the bubble tea lovers. I also would be sure to take her to the Paterson Falls and bring Absolute Zero rolled Ice Cream for a treat. As I am not much of a nightlife person anymore, I would not know of any great hangouts. I know one of our nights would be held back at my place with a great homemade meal, a few glasses of wine, possibly some board games, and good ole movie.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I would have to say it is a blend of three individuals. My former Professor Brian Royster, Professor Beth Adubato, and my Inner Child.

These two professors were a huge catalyst in me not only starting my business but in my personal healing journey. Through their vulnerability and sharing their own personal stories it gave me the courage to begin addressing my own trauma and I am happy to say that they are still in my life even after graduating 3 years ago. I have also been given the privilege to work with Professor Adubato in the space of being of creating a Take Back the Night Committee at our University and also taking a position as a Board Member for her non-profit organization L.I.N.D.A which collects and distributes new and gently used clothes, cosmetics, toiletries and more to marginalized women.

My inner child is also worth mentioning because she was silenced for way too long for many reasons but a great factor of being “different”. One of OshunRoyalty’s principles is to embrace and encourage individuality and uniqueness. Every time I show up in my business and share something from a guided meditation, handmade earrings and bracelets, or intentionally crafted herbal oils I am showing up not only for my inner child but others as well.
