We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
In order to get to the places you’ve never been or do the things you’ve never done you must take risks! I would not be where I am today if I didn’t take any risks. It’s all about taking calculated risk with a plan set in place. When I finally discovered the path I wanted to take was to pursue entrepreneurship, I made sure I did as much research as possible prior to executing the task. The first major risk I took was dropping out of graduate school; I was attending Winston-Salem State University studying Health Administration. I dropped out half way through the semester to instead pursue cosmetology school so I could become a licensed esthetician. Dropping out of graduate school to attend a community college is huge risk, it almost looks as if you are going backwards. The biggest risk I took was finally pulling the plug and quitting my full time job to pursue my business Refined Brow & Beauty. These decisions were the best risks I could have ever taken to see growth within myself and my business.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a licensed esthetician, I can perform services such as skin care services and hair removal services such as facials, body waxing, and more. However, I chose to solely work with one of the most important features of your face; your brows! Your brows frame your entire face. When your brows are on point, nothing else matters! Being a brow artist is not easy and not everyone can do it. As a brow artist you must be super detailed, every brow hair matters. Removing the wrong hairs will dramatically change your brows. When you are sitting in my chair as i’m doing your brows, I create a brow shape that is tailored to you and your face. Everyone’s brows and faces are different shapes and sizes, therefore you cannot have anyone else’s brow except yours. I create natural brows specifically for you, I don’t shape everyone to have the same cookie cutter shaped brows. The things i’m most proud of is my growth within my business which happened so quickly. In December 2019, I had 124 appointments for the month by December 2020, I had 444 appointments for the month. Within my first year of business I was getting fully booked for the entire month by month 5 after being shut down for 3 months due covid and worldwide shutdown. Getting my business to the point where I am getting fully booked for the month was not easy at all! It took tons and tons of marketing and advertisement, I took the time of quarantine to focus on my exposure since i couldn’t be physically working. It’s so easy to get discouraged and give up, especially in this new era of social media. You can get so wrapped up in what everyone else has going on and their successes, comparing yourself to them. You must remind yourself to stay focused and remaining tunnel vision of your journey.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Salim Collins, he was the one to push me and support me into the direction of entrepreneurship. He was there each and every step of the way. He helped me lock in as a built my business from the ground up, his support allowed me to just focus on my business and grow it while he took care of everything else. My business would not have grown as much as it did so quickly without his support. I am so grateful to have him in my corner.
