We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmin Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking: I feel that everyone should take risks! Risks need to be taken to determine who we really are. We need risks to challenge us and to humble us. I believe that risks come with great rewards. I grew up a rebel and unafraid of taking risks. My mom encouraged me to be different so I grew up with a rebellious spirit and I took risks in not only fashion but in life as well. Taking risks has affected my life significantly and has shaped the courageous woman that I am today. Without taking risks I would’ve never went on to chase my dreams, teach myself how to sew, start my own business, or relocate to California.

What should our readers know about your business?
Pretty Thuggish is a handmade luxury streetwear brand created by myself in 2015. Pretty Thuggish mission is to inspire people to embrace every challenge with grit and grace. Growing up with a skin disorder and suffering from hair loss at a young age. Early on I learned to embrace what made me different and expressed myself no matter the odds. As a self- taught sewist, I really wanted to create my own streetwear brand and encourage people to express themselves as well. Pretty Thuggish mission is to inspire people to embrace every challenge with grit and grace. Life isn’t always pretty sometimes you have to thug it out.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestfriend was visiting LA I would take him to Hollywood Blvd, Rodeo Drive, Venice Beach, Downtown Long Beach and the Crenshaw District. I love Hollywood and the famous hollywood bus tours. Rodeo Drive and the luxurious boutiques and fancy cars. I love hanging out and dining in downtown long beach. Long Beach has great eateries, bars, and Sunday brunches. My bestfriend is a fan of the late and great Nipsey Hussle, so am I, so of course I have to take him through crenshaw district to show how the marathon still continues.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout my mother, Michelle Alston-Brown. She is truly my backbone and has always been there to support me throughout life and I am blessed beyond measure to be able to call her Mum.
