We had the good fortune of connecting with Janjay Innis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janjay, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want to be remembered for fostering connections among people and building a beloved community.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My niche is that The Africa Expo is in business to uplift and highlight the innovation of Black businesses, particularly small entrepreneurs. I am most proud that I had something to offer the world and pushed behind self doubt to implement it. I’ve made It to this moment, because I’ve been able to leverage my relationships. It hasn’t been easy, but I want people to know me as social entrepreneur. I want people to know that the motivations for beginning The Africa Expo is deeply rooted in wanting to make a positive impact in communities and in society at large.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As an activist and a museum lover, it would be essential for my visitor to visit either the The King Center or The Center for Civil and Human Rights and of course, the High Museum of Art. We’d likely take a stroll through Piedmont Park and depending on when we are there, we are likely to catch a festival there. My favorite neighborhood is Little Five Points. There are cultural eateries of all kinds there and the coolest shops for whatever you’re looking for. The murals on and surrounding Krog Street are a sight to behold and we’d certainly spend some time at Ponce City Market. I’ve only just scratched the surface of places to go and things to do. There is always something to do and see in Atlanta.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not have accomplished my dreams without the help of my love village. When The Africa Expo was just a crazy dream, these people helped me kickstart my project through gifts, their presence and words of encouragement.
