We had the good fortune of connecting with janet gourand and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi janet, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had struggled with alcohol dependence for many years. In 2015 I finally managed to quit drinking. I felt so much better that I became passionate about the alchol free lifestyle and wanted to inspire others.

My professional background was in training and development so I designed workshops to help people quit drinking – they were very popular and people wanted more connection and more content.

So I designed a membership program, alcohol free challenges and trained as a recovery coach.

My goal is not make a profit but to redirect revenue into marketing so that we can reach more people who need us.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I worked in the corporate space for 25 years. I was an HR Director in London until the age of 50 when I relocated to South Africa. I worked as an independent HR Consultant for 10 years and discovered that I loved working for myself rather than in a big company.

I have discovered real purpose in my work since I set up Tribe Sober in 2015. I was able to transfer the skills I had gained in my corporate career (training & development & executive coaching & management) to my current role.

I’ve picked up some new skills as well such as creating an editing the Tribe Sober weekly podcast – there are now 200+ episodes out there with more than 300,000 downloads.

At Tribe Sober we’ve helped hundreds of people to give up drinking and go on to thrive in their alcohol free lifestyles. We have a vibrant international community and 400 subscription members from all over the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So many world class restaurants here in Cape Town – the Nines, La Colombe, Pier, Harbour House, the Pot Luck Club to name just a few.

Aquilla Safari – just a couple of hours drive from Cape Town to see the Big 5

Stunning beaches everywhere – Camps Bay beach is my favourite

Sea Point promenade for a long and beautiful walk
