We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle Martinez-Cruz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janelle, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Balancing work and life has changed within the past year. I prioritize family, friendships, and being outside. Balancing time off, even if it’s 30 minutes out of the day, helps keep me motivated. So, what I like to do is schedule a day to review and list out everything I have to complete that week. Then I will categorize and prioritize accordingly. That includes scheduling time where I don’t hop on emails, Dm’s, or touch my iPad. Scheduling things accordingly helps hold myself accountable to complete projects but, also live and breathe. My life motto is to be inspired by the joy of the sun. Being bright and happy is my everyday goal. Balancing life and work is number one to be able to do this.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a Cuban-Puertorican artist and designer based in Atlanta, GA. While my work ranges in subject matter, the inspiration behind my work comes from the memories and moments with my (big Cuban) family, nature, and the ocean. While I pursued an Associate’s degree in Graphic Design and Visual Arts, I learned to appreciate all forms of art and learned to tell visual stories.
I strive to share positivity, joy, and story through art. When I’m not in the studio, you can find me on a horse, kayaking, admiring gardens, and spending time with family and friends.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a coffee lover, I would start the day by taking them to Stereo in East Atlanta. Then spend some time near Centennial Park, and end the day exploring Ponce City Market and the rooftop!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Glad & Young Leather shop is full of fun, art, and love!
