We had the good fortune of connecting with Janel Stevens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janel, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?

Ask yourself what would make your soul smile? If you were assigned a role for the rest of your life, what would it be? Are you currently doing either of those? If not, keep going because you haven’t arrived at your final destination yet.

Big goals always require more from the person trying to achieve them. You’re going to have days where everything goes wrong and you may encounter months of nothing but roadblocks, but there’s going to be a day where things just fall into place and you feel as though it was all worth it. When there’s something that you’re working towards that’s for you, the answer always presents itself. It may not be as soon as you would like and it may come with a few obstacles along the way, but the goal is to ride through those hills and valleys until you arrive at your destination. Sometimes you have to take a break and come back with fresh eyes and a clear mind. The answer will appear and you’ll wonder how you didn’t think of it sooner. Realizing that you almost gave up on your dream over something so small can cause you to reexamine your approach and question how determined you really are at achieving whatever it is your goal may be.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

In undergrad, I majored in Management and minored in Marketing. My first role after graduating was in a public relations firm. I then moved on to doing fundraising and development for various non-profits. I loved both fields because they allowed me to work with people and create events that would leave them with lasting memories. There wasn’t anything else I would have chosen to do at that time because I was a part of something that truly fulfilled me.

Eventually, I ended up transitioning into the field of Accounting. I remained a part of that industry for close to 10 years before I decided to take another leap. I missed interacting with others as I did within my previous roles. The time had come for me to finally invest in myself and do what I knew would make me happy…connecting with others again and starting my skincare line.

When it came to Yomoi Skin, I knew that I didn’t want to offer private label. My goal was to provide skincare that was specially made by me for people that were looking for the same thing I had sought out for many years…a natural product line that left my skin moisturized, soft and glowing while combating other issues such as hyperpigmentation, acne and aging skin. Not only did I want to address these skin issues, I also needed each product to deliver on whatever claim it made.

Over the span of three years, I formulated and tested all of my products, using testers of various age groups to observe the difference in how their skin reacted. The products included ingredients that could be easily pronounced and that most were familiar with. Nothing offered by Yomoi Skin has been watered down in order to save money. I invested in this product to create the quality that I would like offered to me by any brand that I support.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

When it comes to the metro Atlanta area, there are so many pockets of entertainment. Where you end up hanging out normally depends on how far of a commute everyone is willing to make and whether or not traffic will be an issue.

Due to the pandemic, many of my favorite spots have closed. Many new venues have opened their doors and I hope to try them soon so that I can revive my list of favorites.

For now, I will say visit your local small businesses. They put a lot into whatever it is they’re offering and the experience may end up being more unique and enjoyable than it would have been had you gone elsewhere. Bigger corporations will always find a way to make it through these difficult times, but small businesses face a much bigger battle when trying to keep their doors open.
