We had the good fortune of connecting with Janay Stubbs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janay, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Hair Extensions have been around forever and at the time, the Chinese/Indian suppliers were dominating the market. But, the doll like overly shiny silk hair never matched my natural hair in luster or texture which made it hard to blend. That’s when I knew I wanted to find an origin of hair that best matched hair like mine with low to medium luster, coarseness that ranges from a medium grit all the way to a very heavy wire-like bushy coarseness, and have the ability to be different curl patterns to blend with my Black hair. When I found Cambodian hair, I knew other women would love how this hair feels and acts… so, Cambodian Hair Freak was born!

What should our readers know about your business?
The hair industry has been known to be saturated with companies offering different styles of hair extensions. Majority of the origins come from China and India which has dominated the market for decades. Cambodian Hair Freak started when I wanted to find hair that best matches the characteristics of Black Hair without being overly populated by the market. Cambodian Hair Freak extensions are sourced/harvested and imported straight from Cambodia in its raw & pure state. We personally customize each batch to find the perfect natural color state, texture, luster, and pattern to offer the best hair we can for our customers. Each Glueless Lace Wig is machine sewn and personally colored/cut/styled to perfection so each of our customers have their own unique wig unit!

Starting Cambodian Hair Freak was not easy in the least bit! Sourcing vendors that can be trusted to offer an honest and ethically sourced hair product was a task within itself. It can be extremely expensive to constantly sample hair extensions and have them ship from Cambodia to USA, but a cost that can’t be avoided.

Having a vision of where we see the company going has been the driving force for every move we’ve made. There’s no concrete handbook on how to run and maintain a hair company that fits all situations, so learning and constantly growing is a must. Sticking to the vision of what the company needs to look like and the experience it needs to offer is a must! It is very easy to get off track or to get derailed when situations arrive, but that is the exciting part of this journey!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since having 7 children, all of the favorite places to go have to be family oriented! I love taking the family to start off the day with breakfast at either Atlanta Breakfast Club or Breakfast at Barney’s to get a good meal in. Then, it’s off to Zoo Atlanta to see the animals and feed the giraffes. My babies love seeing the different species they have and my husband loves getting the kids out of the house. They also have a mini park there to play with other children and make friends along this experience. We also love taking the kids to Piedmont Park to get that extra energy out before getting lunch. Keeping them entertained is always a challenge when there’s 7 little people with a million different interests!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Starting a new venture was not easy and does take a huge leap of faith. My husband Vincent Stubbs has been the silent partner and cheerleader for Cambodian Hair Freak from the very beginning. His vision for this company and what the ultimate goal & mission is has surpassed even my own. Combining Luxury Hair Extensions & Glueless Lace Wigs that connects with Black women using Pure Cambodian Hair that is ethically sourced/harvested has been his sole vision that has driven this company in the direction that we have been going in.
