We had the good fortune of connecting with Janae White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janae, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Maintaining a healthy work-life balance as an artist can be extraordinarily challenging due to the constant need to create and the almost incessant effort to improve one’s business. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and give too much time to one part of your career while neglecting everything else. It is important to build activities and habits into your life that help to keep things in balance, this a Goal of mine to figure out because I have to master this task. Setting boundaries helps to ensure that you dedicate the necessary time to creating while also taking care of all the other aspects of life. For a creative this can be very difficult Adjusting to help take care of two toddlers has been a tricky and rewarding experience in my life, a steep learning curve that I continue to face every day.
Time management is another essential skill that has been instrumental in helping me adjust to painting in a house with kids. By being organized, scheduling the most important tasks first, and taking regular breaks to relax, I have been able to carve out segments of time to paint without feeling overwhelmed.
Finally, I have also done my best to make sure I take care of my mental health.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I am most proud of seeing the people who connect to my work, this brings me joy that young girls or boys can see themselves and inspire them to be the best them. When they tell me how my work brings them happiness or makes them smile and helps their mental health, It’s kind of hard to explain the feeling of something I have created with my hands and affecting some emotional or mental is wild. I’m honored to be the vessel.
Even though I’ve always been a creative person all my life my art career just began in 2019. I had never taught of being a professional artist before then and never thought people would care about the pictures that were dancing around in my head. I’m a self-taught artist and began experimenting with techniques and styles. Throughout the year my style began to morph into what we see today which is still not a specific style. I like to see things and get inspired by the world around us from nature to body language and music.
Having to teach myself everything in my career so far, I went from abstract to pouring to figures to digital to surrealism. 2020 when the world shut down, California ran out of physical supplies so I moved over to digital and my career began to build. Since 2020, I have been blessed to be able to work with WNBA LA Sparks on a New Jersey release, an affirmation coloring book called Color My Soul, and an illustration book for kids called I Am Me in the digital space. Painting on mirrors has become my signature canvas and somewhat of a calling card for me in my fine art journey.
The life of an artist never sleeps, we have to be our own manager, the digital marketing team, the street team, and the curator. It can be hard at times and feel like I want to quit but once I put the brush to the canvas and get in my zone it’s like everything melts away and I fall in love with art over and over, seeing the finished product is so rewarding.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m always at a bar vegan in ponce city market it’s always a vibe. The underground is starting to become the mecca for art culture. Visiting all the fun art events around the city And if it is a Sunday then I’m going to Bonfire atl
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, they have supported my career and assisted with things that I need. I can’t thank them enough. I also have to shout out my collector and supporters, people who have bought my books or invested in my pieces. Thank you all. And of course, I have to thank God, without him none of this would be possible!
