We had the good fortune of connecting with James Harrison Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I would always look at other content creators whether it was youtube, Vine, World Star videos, etc publishing material that I was already doing w/ friends but too hesitant put online because of fear of displaying a different side of myself that I don’t usually project. With podcasting, I had been a big fan of podcasts like The Read, Brilliant Idiots, Joe Budden Podcast because while these were known personalities; when they’re recording their guards were down and you got to really hear from the person not the characters that they usually were in front of a camera. You got to see a vulnerable side of them and the topics they discussed made you feel as if you were in the studio with them. I felt that that was something I could do no problem because I can talk from sun up to sun fall. I discussed with my friend that we should do this because our phone conversation were so good that everyone should hear what we had to say. We felt it was selfish to horde this amazing convo between the two of us. Egotistical I know, but we felt like what we talked about on the phone could relate to anyone. Fast forwarded now I feel like we made the right decision.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The 8 More Than 92 podcast is basically a decompression zone where you can just come to relax, unwind, laugh, and engage in good dialogue. The podcast gets labeled as a comedy because we love to make folks laugh but there is so much more to the show than that one label. We talk about everything from current events, sports, to gender specific topics when men and women can discuss their point of views with one another. We don’t just speak to men, we speak to all people. You can look at our podcast and find an episode that fits who you are. That’s something we pride ourselves on. That is where I feel like we’ve set ourselves apart from other podcast; the fact that you can’t box us into one category of a show. What I’m most proud about is that we have kept it going. A lot of times you will hear folks saying they don’t know when is the right time to start but in reality consistency is the real obstacle. Not quitting when you haven’t hit expectations that you haven’t hit for yourself yet is an obstacle of its own. We got to where we are now from consistency, there was no blueprint on how to make our show successful from an independent standpoint. A lot of the shows I mentioned earlier were established by notable names. We were regular Joe’s (a Navy Medic & a teacher) who didn’t live in the same place trying to go about being like the top shows except through zoom (at the time). We didn’t want to be seen as just another one of the millions of podcast that you can overlook. This made it hard in the beginning because you learn that podcasting isn’t just about recording. I had to learn how to be my own producer, manager, social media publisher, booking agents for guest, clothing designer, and marketer. Those definitely weren’t what I signed up for but I knew if I wanted to make something of this I would have to learn. The return on investment has been worth all of the trial/error and stress. What we have been able to accomplish in just over two years has exceeded my expectations so much that at times I have to sit back and ask myself “did we really do that?”. I want the world to know that I bet on myself to be able to showcase “James Harrison Jr” to the world on a big stage. Allowing folks see someone other than the person that I display on a day to day basis. Doing this has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. We took nothing and made it into something that is on trijectory to be one of the best shows out.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well right now Im stationed in Virginia but if I had a friend visiting my hometown Nashville TN, Then the first thing we would do is go get something to eat. Nashville has Just about every type of restaurant you can think of . Folks know of the hot chicken but its much more there to eat. I would take them to Slim& Husky’s Pizza or Vehicle City Coney’s food truck. Those are both amazing Nashville based food establishments that will have someone licking the plate. Then for drinks I would take them to the Thirsty turtle because its no gimmicks there. You get a realistic vibe of the city, the people, and the music scene (HipHop/R&B).Nashville gets that country music capital label but if you ask people who really grew up there, they would tell you that country music is not the go to music of choice. Then for Night life I would take them to a club called the WKND. Activities wise we would go karting at Nashville speedway, Top Golf, catch a movie or go to a Tennessee Titans Football game, #Titanup. We also have Hockey and an MLS team as well. There is also the African American museum, or you can go to zanies comedy club and check out Josh Black who is an amazing stand up comedian from Nashville TN. Of course we have Opry Mills malls if you want to go shopping.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give my brother some recognition for being the one to show me how to get started with this. He showed me that a regular person can get on a microphone every week, be themselves, and have folks eagerly tuned in to hear what he has to say. So Noah Thank you, Can’t keep it 8 More Than 92 w/o you.
