We had the good fortune of connecting with James Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I used to put more emphasis into my social life and what I considered to be fun. Over time, I realized that anything meaningful dealt with work and putting in effort. This changed my view of a work life balance, I could do the work by incorporating it into more of my life and not seeing it so much as what I have to do. If your lifestyle and social life has to do with planning, why not add more organization into that? The things you do creates skills that you often don’t realize. Everything is work, the balance is finding yourself comfortable in the midst of the doing.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a creative project management professional as well as a business owner of a luxury home decor accessories line. I’ve always found myself creating or organizing in my free time but never really had an idea of what I could do with that professionally. I didn’t know any project managers growing up, I don’t even think I knew of anyone in the tech field. It wasn’t until I moved out of my hometown to go to school where I was around what felt bigger than I was used to. I got a degree in Network Management and worked myself up to running projects early on. I did more research on how to get better, also while reading the PMBOK guide and got a better idea of what I was interested in. I started off taking different contract roles to really understand the processes and work flows and then decided to try my hand at freelance and more creative avenues of project management. I wouldn’t say anything is easy per-say but the challenges motivate you to find new ways to be creative and solve problems. I used many of the same process flows to create my business (Superlative Home) which I run like an e-commerce project. Along the way I’ve learned that team work is everything. “Alone we go fast, together we go far.” You can be amazing at what you do individually but with a team aligning to the same goals you’ll get so much more done. I don’t necessarily know what’s next individually or with business but I do have an idea for new home products launching early 2025 and in my next season of life I plan to do more mentorship and training around the field of project management.
