We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamell Ogbonna and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamell, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting SOUL EXP (exp stands for expression/experience) is the principle that we all have value and impact that we can provide one another.
All my life, I’ve witnessed talented people without proper recognition. This brand is not about myself nor my talents, but about recognizing and honoring the creativity in individuals from all around the world, more importantly, the creativity that God gave them. To help them realize that their creative dreams and aspirations are attainable.
Creativity in and of itself has had value since the beginning of time, but now more than ever, it has become more pertinent to the culture of society. Since 2020 the world hasn’t been the same, and amongst the continuous uncertainty, trials, and tribulations, we have also seen an increase in discovery, exploration, and innovation. In these times, the desire for expression has grown exponentially. On the backend of that, people are craving experiences at higher levels (whether they be short, long, temporary, or memorable).
There is increased demand for expression and a current oversaturation of content. Meaning it gets more challenging to break through the noise. At SOUL EXP, we will not only offer the platform, tools, and strategies necessary to effectively promote your brand, but we’ll also provide guidance in the creative process so that your vision is implemented…and ultimately turned into reality.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe what sets me apart from others is the amount of intent I put into my work. I actively think about how I want the audience to experience my expression. Whether it’s the music and content I post on social media, engaging with the audience during live performances, or the work we can do with SOUL EXP, there will always be a clear intention. Honestly, when I started making content in 2020, I had no idea where to start nor where it would take me. All I knew was that I intended to bring joy through what I love, MUSIC. Alongside intent, consistency truly helped me get to where I am today. Since 2020 I would post three pcs of content a week, on the same days, at the same time, without fail. Not only building up the brand but also building up resiliency. Although challenging, the journey helped me learn that consistent action added with enjoyment for the process yields more satisfaction than focusing solely on the outcome.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If someone was visiting ATL for the first time, this is what I would do. First and foremost, we have to slide to Zaxby’s or American Deli for lunch. Then we would ride over to Atlantic Station and go to a few stores. After we shop, get dinner at Yard House and then ice cream from Kilwin’s. Next, probably catch a vibe at Mansion Elan and end the night off right at Waffle House…it’s the only law.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a super big shoutout to God, my family, friends, friends who are family, and mentors that have aided in my journey throughout the years. I’m grateful to have such a support system in my corner, where I’m not only encouraged but also challenged to become a better version of myself every day.
Also, I want to give a major shoutout to everybody that has shown love for my platform and SOUL EXP. I do what I do for you guys, and it means a lot that you continue to vibe with me while these expressions become experiences. I thank you all for everything, and I plan on enjoying every step of this journey as it continues to unfold. From this point forward, the focus is on producing value, invoking emotion, and creating change.
