We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamecia Bowers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamecia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The idea to start my own business actually came as a suggestion from my dad. I had been working part time as his dental assistant and part time in the spa industry in the year after receiving by aesthetics license. At that point, I thought working full time for a spa would be the next step to take however, my dad suggested building out the back of his dental office which was just being used for storage at time. He only worked in the dental office three days each week and suggested I use the off days to establish and run the spa. After a lot of prayer and meditation, I made the decision to open Beauty by Bowers Day Spa. Opening the spa instead of working for an already established one was the right decision. I wanted to be able to treat my clients like family. Having the flexibility to cater each appointment to the specific needs of the individuals seeking care was and is extremely important to me. I realized, after speaking to others in the industry, that it is difficult to do that when you are not the one who sets the parameters and rules. Nurturing and taking the time to care for clients on an individual basis was the reason I decided to take the leap to open Beauty by Bowers Day Spa in 2012 and I have not regretted it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Timeless would be the word I use to describe the makeup I create. Trends can be beautiful and creative but when looking back on the different time periods of the past, some stand out as being from one particular era or another. I strive to create timeless looks that will transcend through the ages. When making up a face it is not my objective to change the entire look of a person but highlight the specific features and enhance the unique qualities that are already present. Bringing forward the beauty that is already naturally there.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came into town for the weekend we would start with having brunch at The Real Milk and Honey in downtown College Park. While in the downtown College Park area we would visit Mina’s (a wig shop). Our next stop would be Ponce City market to do some shopping and lunch. We would conclude the first day with dinner at Kyma in Buckhead. On the second day we would we would visit the King Center, then ride the Sky View Ferris wheel and walk Centennial Park. That day would end with a movie/dinner at IPIC Movie Theater, The last day we would go to a matinee show at the Fabulous Fox Theatre and pick up dinner at the Slutty Vegan. It would be a busy weekend, with a full itinerary but packed with fun and food!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would be remiss to not to mention my dad, James Bowers, DDS. He was my very first mentor, my hero and inspiration. He has always and continues to support and love me unconditionally. I seek to model his work ethic, faith and heart for people. He is truly my favorite person and I would certainly not be who I am without him. There are many names of mentors, friends and associates I could add to this but my dad towers over all the rest.
