We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamal White and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamal, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Perseverance! I know people mention this often, however I really stand behind this idea. I tried to remain really clear, throughout my career, on what my goals are. Of course there were moments on my path that were extremely difficult and I had to pivot. I learned early on that there were infinite paths to what I aimed to accomplish; this helped me remain creative and encouraged we I felt derailed.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve gotten to where I am today because of my peers in art. I made a conscious effort to cultivate and nurture relationships with artists that had similar goals of success. I wanted to surround myself with folks that were dedicated, resilient, talented, and uplifting. They supported my desired level of focus and It truly shaped my career.

This journey wasn’t easy! Sometimes the work, although I was extremely passionate, was difficult. A mentor of mine told me years ago to remember to live your life! In the challenging times, I would take time to invest in my interest outside of the work I do. In turn I would find new inspiration that ignited my creative flame; sometimes you have to take a step back to move forward.

Along my way I learned that patience is a virtue. Often times the road looked dark, however, with patience, things would come together. In my career it’s important to “plant seeds” and invest in the things I wanted. Waiting for those things to actualize can be difficult, however they do!

I want the world to know that I love art and I believe it is integral to the sustainment of our communities! There is something for all of us to connect to so we have to support the development of creative projects.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
