We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamaal Wallace and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamaal, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
As a parent the most important thing I have done to impact my daughter is, Leaving my salary job to pursue my dreams in photography and videographer. Taking the leap was very scary since I am a single father at this time so everything completely falls on me to execute. It was a true leap of faith cause at that time I didn’t find my style or even what i really liked, I just knew i didn’t want to work this job managing at Waffle House any more. Dealing with everyones issue and not having the energy to be there and attend to my daughter or my business became really draining. So I decided to make the leap and walk on the side of faith of pursuing entrepreneurship. By doing this I would buy back some lost time with my daughter, so it only made since to me my energy became more positive and more caring, Which made her a happier kid and we have been laughing ever since.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a photographer I feel like or thing that sets us apart is what we have experiences in life. Me being a military veteran I have seen so many walks of life so I tend to be able to vibe with every one I come in contact with. I feel like being a person that is open to all walks of life really helps me out in my beauty photography. Finding a niche is hard when you have bills to pay, however doing something that motivates you as a creative is the ultimate goal. So understanding early what I liked as very important. Cause when you first start you try to do everything, then you soon realize that everything is not for everybody so you have to go with what moves you. What inspires you and go for that the rest will follow. The number one lesson I have learned is to stop comparing your journey to others. Comparison is the thief of joy! The world is full of opportunity and there is room for everyone to eat . I say this to myself all the time ” Put the reps in and the rest is yours study like you want to be great and be great ”
I want the world to know that you can live life and create whatever you want, there are only limitations when you stop going and learning always seek knowledge and be a student of the game. Whatever game you are playing!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly I cant lie I am a cooker so I don’t go out much and try new places. Thats something i will do more of so honestly whatever they find cool on social media I would be down to go do to have fun but to recommend fun things that not me
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I would like to say I want to thank God for giving me the idea to pick up a camera and having the ability to understand the importance of investing in self. If I would have to choose someone to Shoutout it would have to be my first mentor fellow photographer Jordyn Ari. After investing in myself and learning the basic from youtube, her coarse and trail in error. I was granted the opportunity to work closely with her as her assistant. During this time I was able to learn about the business and marketing, customer service and how to carry yourself as a creative. This small investment in myself let me see in real time how to be a successful photographer. As I look back now, I see how vital a mentor was because I got to skip a-lot of growing pains that most people have to endure.
I also want to Shoutout my daughter that has been my best muse and best supporter through out this whole journey. I remember having to take her tot he studio all the time, where she would sit there on her ipad. Play with her dolls and watch her daddy work countless hours to get better at his craft. She didn’t know it but her smile let me know that I made the best decision in life to pursue my dreams in photography
