We had the good fortune of connecting with Jalen Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jalen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As a former student-athlete and someone who has always been passionate about fitness and fashion, I noticed a gap in the market for activewear that was both stylish and functional.

Starting Chasing Activewear wasn’t without its challenges. From sourcing the right materials to building a brand identity, every step taught me valuable lessons about persistence, creativity, and the importance of staying true to my vision.

I wanted to create a brand that embodies the spirit of those who are constantly chasing their goals, whether in the gym or in life. I realized that many activewear options either lacked durability, weren’t inclusive of all body types, or simply didn’t make people feel confident and empowered. I wanted to address these issues by creating a line that is not only high-quality but also celebrates all shapes and sizes.

My vision with Chasing Activewear is to inspire people to push their limits and feel their best, both physically and mentally. Our mission is to provide activewear that supports this journey, offering comfort, style, and performance in every piece.

As Chasing Activewear continues to grow, I’m excited to expand our product line, reach more people, and continue promoting a lifestyle of health, confidence, and perseverance.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The Journey of Building My Career: A Story of Perseverance, Passion, and Purpose
My professional journey is a tapestry woven with threads of determination, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As the founder of Chasing Activewear, a concealed carry weapon (CCW) instructor, and an accountant, I have navigated through various challenges and triumphs that have shaped me into the person I am today. My story is one of passion meeting purpose, where each step forward has been driven by a commitment to empower others, create value, and leave a lasting impact.

The Genesis of Chasing Activewear
Chasing Activewear was born out of a desire to blend fashion with function, creating activewear that not only looks good but performs exceptionally well. What sets my brand apart is the emphasis on quality, comfort, and inclusivity. I wanted to create something that resonates with individuals who are chasing their dreams, goals, and an active lifestyle. This brand is more than just clothing; it’s a movement that encourages people to push beyond their limits, both physically and mentally.

The journey to establishing Chasing Activewear was not easy. It required countless hours of research, design, and testing to ensure that every piece met the highest standards. There were moments of doubt, financial constraints, and the ever-present fear of failure. However, these challenges only fueled my determination. I invested in a storage unit to streamline operations and ensure that our products were always available to our customers, both online and in-store. This decision, though daunting at first, proved to be a game-changer for the business.

Balancing Athletics and Academics
Before launching my professional career, I was a student-athlete who had to navigate the dual demands of academics and athletics. This experience was formative in shaping my work ethic and resilience. I earned five championships, a testament to the hard work, discipline, and teamwork that sports require. The journey to those championships was filled with early mornings, grueling practices, and the constant pressure to perform at my best. But these challenges taught me the value of perseverance, mental toughness, and the importance of a strong support system.

In my final year as a graduate student, I had the privilege of serving as an assistant graduate coach. This role allowed me to mentor younger athletes, helping them navigate the same challenges I had faced. Coaching was a rewarding experience that reinforced my belief in the power of leadership and the importance of giving back. It was through coaching that I realized the impact one can have on others by sharing knowledge, offering guidance, and leading by example.

The Path to Becoming a CCW Instructor
In addition to my entrepreneurial endeavors, I am also a certified CCW instructor. This role is deeply personal to me, as it allows me to empower individuals to protect themselves and their loved ones. Safety and responsibility are at the core of my teachings, and I take pride in knowing that I am making a difference in people’s lives. The path to becoming an instructor was rigorous, requiring extensive training, certifications, and a deep understanding of firearms and self-defense laws. Yet, the satisfaction of seeing my students gain confidence and competence in their skills makes every challenge worth it.

Academic Achievements and Professional Growth
My academic background in accounting, with a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame College and a master’s degree from The Ohio State University, laid a solid foundation for my career. These achievements were not handed to me on a silver platter. They were the result of late nights, meticulous study sessions, and an unwavering belief in the power of education. My mentor, Shapelle Pisano, CPA, played a significant role in my development, providing guidance, wisdom, and encouragement when I needed it most.

As an accountant, I have honed my analytical skills, attention to detail, and financial acumen. These skills have been instrumental in managing the finances of my business and ensuring its sustainability. The lessons I’ve learned along the way—such as the importance of financial planning, risk management, and strategic decision-making—have been invaluable in both my personal and professional life.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Growth
The journey to where I am today has been anything but easy. There were times when the weight of responsibilities felt overwhelming, and the road ahead seemed uncertain. However, I have always believed that challenges are opportunities in disguise. Every obstacle I faced taught me a valuable lesson: resilience, adaptability, and the importance of a strong support system.

My parents, John and Monica Boyd, have been my pillars of strength, offering unwavering support and love throughout my journey. Their belief in my abilities has been a source of motivation, driving me to push through the toughest of times. I have also learned the importance of surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who inspire and challenge me to grow.

What I Want the World to Know
If there is one thing I want the world to know about me and my brand, it’s that success is not a destination but a journey. It’s about the relentless pursuit of your passions, the courage to take risks, and the resilience to overcome setbacks. Chasing Activewear is not just a brand; it’s a testament to what can be achieved when you combine hard work, creativity, and a desire to make a difference.

My story is still being written, with each chapter bringing new challenges and opportunities. I am proud of what I have accomplished, but I am even more excited about what lies ahead. I am committed to continuing this journey of growth, innovation, and empowerment, and I invite others to join me in chasing their own dreams.

In conclusion, my career has been a blend of passion, perseverance, and purpose. It has not been easy, but every challenge I’ve faced has made me stronger and more determined. I am grateful for the lessons learned, the people who have supported me, and the opportunities to make a positive impact. My story is a reminder that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
